“Green tourism” becomes inevitable for action and development...

Vietnam’s tourism industry has had an impressive recovery and growth, gradually affirming its position as a key economic sector. However, in the face of current challenges, “green tourism” is no longer an option, but has become a vital necessity for action and further development.

On the morning of December 5, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, in coordination with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province and the Swiss Tourism Project for Sustainable Development in Vietnam (ST4SD), organized the annual Forum with the theme "National Green Tourism ".

The Forum is a practical activity to implement the National Strategy and National Action Plan on Green Growth for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. At the same time, it promotes the implementation of the Government and Prime Minister's directives in ensuring growth targets for sectors and fields, including tourism.

Dr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism delivered the opening speech.

In his opening speech, Dr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, said that the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy to 2030 has identified specific contents on green tourism development, such as developing sustainable and inclusive tourism, on the basis of green growth, maximizing the contribution of tourism to the United Nations' sustainable development goals; effectively managing and using natural resources, protecting the environment and biodiversity, proactively adapting to climate change, ensuring national defense and security, etc.

However, facing challenges from climate change, environmental pollution at some destinations and pressure from overcrowding, it is sounding the alarm bell about sustainable development and the balance between effectively exploiting tourism resources, protecting the environment and improving the competitiveness of destinations. Therefore, “green tourism” is no longer an option, but has become a vital necessity for action and further development.

At the forum, the main discussion sessions took place with the participation of more than 100 delegates including leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; leaders and professional staff of the Department of Tourism, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; associations, businesses operating in the tourism sector, tourism training institutions, scientists and leading policy experts, and experts from Switzerland.

Domestic and international experts and managers participated in the discussion session at the forum.

The main content of the forum focuses on the topic "models, initiatives and policies for managing green tourism destinations in Vietnam - perspectives from stakeholders", providing an overview of green tourism development in Vietnam, models, experiences and initiatives on green transformation from organizations and countries around the world; at the same time introducing typical models and initiatives in the country.

Along with the discussion session on “Action framework for developing green tourism in Vietnam in the new context”, focusing on key tasks and specific solutions for the coming period, such as building a toolkit to implement green transformation in Vietnam tourism, the need to build a network of stakeholders involved in the transformation process and making proposals on mechanisms to encourage innovative and creative ideas to promote green tourism development and effective management of green tourism destinations in Vietnam.

Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province Nguyen Lan Ngoc spoke at the forum.

At the forum, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lam Dong province Nguyen Lan Ngoc said that Lam Dong aims to become a “green paradise” by 2030 with the attraction of high-class resort-ecological-healthcare-sea sports and entertainment centers of national and international stature. Ms. Ngoc emphasized that green transformation in tourism is a mandatory requirement if we want to develop sustainably and responsibly in the future.

Tourism experts present relevant topics at the forum.

This is the first annual Forum organized to raise awareness and promote strong and positive actions of all levels, sectors, tourism entities and local communities in practicing green tourism in Vietnam, contributing to improving the competitiveness of destinations and changing the image of Vietnamese tourism in line with the world tourism development trend.

Delegates experience the cultural space of the Co Ho ethnic group at Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park.

Delegates surveyed and conducted field research on prominent tourist routes at the Elephant Mountain Pine Forest tourist area.

Within the framework of the forum, delegates had a field trip to survey and research a number of green tourism models in Lam Dong, such as the biodiversity route and the population of 108 heritage pine trees at Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park; prominent tourist routes at the Elephant Mountain Pine Forest tourist area.
