The super battery race on smartphones in the Vietnamese market has heated up with a battery with a capacity of up to 7,000 mAh on the Pova 7 smartphone model that the TECNO brand launched in early July 2025.

Fierce competition

A few years ago, the best battery capacity on a smartphone was only 5,000 mAh. The "big battery" capacity milestone has been pushed up to 6,000 mAh and then 7,000 mAh with new criteria such as thin, light, long life and super fast charging.

Since October 2019, the Samsung Galaxy M30s has had a 6,000 mAh battery, and in September 2020, the Samsung Galaxy M51 has a 7,000 mAh battery. The latest is the Samsung Galaxy M15 5G launched in April 2024 with a 6,000 mAh battery. From 2024, more smartphone manufacturers will push the battery milestone to 6,000 mAh and higher. It is impossible to count all the smartphone models with this capacity, such as: Xiaomi 15 Pro (6,100 mAh), Redmi Turbo 4 (6,550 mAh), OPPO F29 (6,500 mAh), OPPO Find X8s+ (6,000 mAh), Vivo S20 (6,500 mAh), Realme GT7 Pro (6,500 mAh), Realme C73 (6,000 mAh), HONOR X60 GT (6,300 mAh), TECNO Pova 7 5G (6,000 mAh)... By mid-2025, the number of smartphones with new generation 7,000 mAh battery capacity such as TECNO Pova 7 4G (7,000 mAh), Realme Neo7 Turbo (7,200 mAh), Vivo iQOO Z10 (7,300 mAh), Redmi K80 Ultra (7,410 mAh), Redmi Turbo 4 Pro (7,550 mAh)... Especially, in the year By 2025, smartphones with "super-huge" battery capacities exceeding 8,000 mAh have begun to appear. After launching the HONOR Power with an 8,000 mAh battery and 66W charging in April 2025, HONOR said that in July 2025 it will launch the HONOR X70 with an 8,300 mAh battery.

However, in the world , some brands also have smartphone models with battery capacity over 10,000 mAh. For example, Doogee S89 Pro in August 2022 has a 12,000 mAh battery, 65W charging; Blackview BV7300 in 2025 has a 15,000 mAh battery, 45W charging; Oukitel WP19 in 2022 has a 21,000 mAh battery, 33W charging; Unihertz Tank in 2022 has a battery up to 22,000 mAh; Doogee S100 Pro in 2023 has a 22,000 mAh battery, 33W charging...

Shorten charging time

Regarding charging speed, a 6,000 mAh or 7,000 mAh battery 3-4 years ago, with a charging capacity of only 15W or 25W, took all night to fully charge.

Samsung's Galaxy M Series "huge battery" smartphone line, whether with a 5,000 mAh or 6,000 mAh battery, or even a 7,000 mAh battery, only has a charging speed of 15W or a maximum of 25W. Currently, there are only 2 Galaxy M Series models, the M55/M55s (September 2024) and M56 (April 2025); and the Galaxy F55 5G (May 2024) and F56 5G (May 2025), that support 45W fast charging. Despite being the world's largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung is very "cautious" about fast charging. Until mid-2025, Samsung's fast charging standard was mainly at 25W, the same as many years ago. Even the latest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z7 Series, launched in July 2025, only has 25W charging for batteries under 4,500 mAh. 45W fast charging is mainly only available in the high-end Galaxy S Series, and only from the two Galaxy S22 Ultra and S22 Plus versions in early 2022 with 5,000 mAh and 4,500 mAh batteries and later.

OPPO is one of the pioneers in investing in developing VOOC and SuperVOOC fast charging technology, which in 2022 reached a capacity of up to 240W. The current common fast charging standard on OPPO smartphones is 45W, while the Reno Series and Find Series from 2-3 years later support super fast charging of 80W and 100W. On the market, 100W charging capacity is currently available on OPPO Find X8 Ultra, Realme Neo7 Turbo, Redmi K80 Ultra... The leading fast charger is currently the Realme GT 7 Series (November 2024) equipped with 120W SuperVOOC charging, which can fully charge a 7,000 mAh battery in just 42 minutes.

With today's super-fast charging technology, users have the advantage of only taking a short time to recharge their smartphone's battery. For example, Vivo Y400 Pro 90W charging can fill 50% of a 5,500 mAh battery in 19 minutes. OPPO's 150W SuperVOOC charging technology can charge a 4,500 mAh battery to 50% in 5 minutes. With 240W SuperVOOC, the time to fully charge a 4,500 mAh battery is only 9 minutes.

Safety Guarantee

For many years, the main obstacle in the fast charging race was that neither battery nor charger technology allowed for increasing the power to too high without ensuring safety.

In recent years, to be able to increase charging time faster to meet the increasing battery capacity, companies have been actively investing in developing new battery and charging technologies to compete. The requirement is that battery capacity must be increasingly larger but the battery size must be thinner and smaller; charging capacity must be increasingly higher but the battery temperature must be lower, especially to ensure maximum safety. In addition, battery life must be increasingly longer.

Since the end of 2024, major Chinese smartphone manufacturers have been using a new type of Silicon Carbon Li-ion battery, which is said to have a higher battery density than traditional Li-ion (Lithium-ion) batteries. This technology can increase battery capacity while still maintaining a thin, small battery size. Currently, Si/C Li-ion batteries are available on smartphones such as Realme GT 7T, OPPO Find X8 Series, Vivo X Fold5, Vivo X200 FE, Realme Neo7 Turbo, Redmi Turbo 4 Pro, HONOR Power... Perhaps because this battery material technology is still too new and needs more time to prove its durability, the two "giants" Apple and Samsung have not yet entered the game with Si/C Li-ion batteries.

Today, manufacturers have also come up with many solutions in both hardware (materials, chips, etc.) and software to ensure battery safety from the super-fast charging process. The combination of advanced chipsets and new, energy-optimized operating systems helps to save a lot on battery consumption, thereby increasing battery life after each charge. Users can now comfortably use their smartphones all day, with peace of mind for long trips. To ensure the new commitment to extend the life of smartphones to 5-7 years, battery life has also been improved by manufacturers. In theory, Li-ion batteries have a certain number of charging cycles - usually ranging from 300 to 500 full charging cycles (ie from 0% to 100%). This level is equivalent to about 2 years of use, the battery is "worn out", gradually reducing its charging capacity. Manufacturers are now focusing on improving technology to extend battery life, reaching more than 1,000 charging cycles, ensuring that after 4 years, 80% of the battery capacity is still maintained.

The super battery race of manufacturers is bringing many practical benefits to smartphone users. The interesting thing is that this race does not affect the price of the device too much.

Important factors to "put down money"

According to a survey by AYTM Technology Information Company, 92% of smartphone users said battery life is an important factor when buying a new device. 85% considered charging time an important factor to consider. 66% said they would even pay a little more for a mobile phone with longer battery life. And 61% said they would pay more for a phone that charges faster.
