On the International Space Station (ISS), which many people believe is reserved for rigorous scientific experiments, astronauts can still do something most of us do every day on Earth: use biometric technology to log in and complete an online transaction.
This event demonstrates the possibility of applying modern technology in space environments, opening up new potential for online management and transactions in the future.
On November 15, on the ISS, Russian astronaut Alexey Zubritsky used biometric technology to complete an online transaction on the Russian Government 's public service portal “Gosuslugi”.
According to Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos, Zubritsky accessed the portal using biometric identification and registered a feature that prevented others from registering a phone SIM card in his name, even if they had his personal documents. The entire process took about 30 seconds.
The Gosuslugi portal is Russia’s online public services platform, which allows citizens to carry out procedures such as applying for a driver’s license, making a medical appointment, paying taxes or processing other administrative documents. Users can log in using their username, password or biometric authentication.
To enhance security and prevent fraud, Russia has tightened procedures for foreigners to buy SIM cards since the beginning of this year. To sign a contract with a network operator, foreigners need to have a personal insurance number (SNILS), create an account on "Gosuslugi," register biometrics and provide the phone's IMEI. If biometric data is not submitted, mobile service will be disconnected./.
