An Phu Dong 35 Street, which was flooded for six months straight, has become much more presentable after over 100 households contributed 1.3 billion VND, along with District 12, to upgrade it.
On the morning of January 1st, residents along An Phu Dong 35 Street in An Phu Dong Ward happily traveled along the newly paved road, which had been in good condition after more than a month of repairs. The sidewalks on both sides were also leveled with concrete. A new system of 60 cm diameter pipes, nearly 400 meters long, was laid beneath the road surface to drain rainwater and tidal water.
This road was flooded for six months due to the lack of a drainage system. Due to a lack of funding, the damaged road surface remained unrepaired until 114 households pooled money with the local government to repair it starting in late November. Each household on the main road contributed 800,000 VND per meter of frontage, while those in the adjacent alleys contributed half of that amount.
Contributing nearly 6 million VND to repair the road, 40-year-old Them said the road has undergone a complete transformation after just one month. Previously, the road was a thick, black mud, and whenever a large vehicle passed over the potholes, dirty water would splash into the houses, making them very messy.
Mr. Phan Chi Tho, 57, who owns a small, one-story house measuring 4 meters wide in an alleyway about ten meters from the main road, happily contributed 1.4 million VND to the road construction. "I feel very comfortable seeing my neighbors contributing money together to build the road," he said.
Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Lan, Chairwoman of the An Phu Dong Ward People's Committee, said that to repair this road, the ward had mobilized residents 4-5 times over two months to contribute approximately 1.3 billion VND, while the district contributed over 1.9 billion VND. The joint contribution of funds from residents and the government shortened the construction time compared to waiting for budget allocations.
