"Examination for pregnant women only focuses on screening and consulting on treatment of congenital abnormalities of the fetus. Any doctor who reveals the gender will be punished," Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuyen - Director of Quang Ngai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital - pledged.
This is to ensure gender balance, so that the child is born with the natural gender instead of the choice of the parents.
In Quang Ngai, there are "hot spots" of gender imbalance such as Minh Long commune, which once had a ratio of 140 males/100 females. Thanks to awareness-changing propaganda, the gender ratio in the commune is now 107.8 males/100 females.
With changing awareness, many pregnant women no longer ask about the gender, instead they are concerned about whether the baby in their womb is healthy or not.
Ms. Dinh Thi Huyen (living in Minh Long commune, Quang Ngai) is 3 months pregnant and is very eager to know the gender of her baby, but "the doctor did not tell me and said my baby is healthy, which makes me happy. I will also pay attention to nutritional supplements as the doctor suggested," Ms. Huyen said.
According to the director of Quang Ngai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, the hospital receives 30-40 newborn babies every day. Statistics on the gender of newborns are at a balanced level.
In addition, the easiest way to choose the sex of a child is through artificial insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, in the 5 years since the establishment of the infertility department, supporting more than 100 families to welcome their children, the department's doctors did not intervene and followed the family's request to choose a son.
Doctor Doan Ton Linh, in charge of the infertility department at the provincial Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, affirmed that the hospital strictly controls the process and absolutely does not accept requests to choose the sex of the fetus.
"The psychology of infertile couples is that they really want to have children, especially boys. But we always advise them to understand that embryo screening means choosing the best quality embryos so that the healthiest baby can be born. The doctor does not interfere with gender selection and also explains so that parents understand that whether it is a girl or a boy, it is still their child. The most important thing is that the child is healthy," said Dr. Linh.
Quang Ngai Department of Health also increased surprise inspections of medical facilities and private ultrasound clinics; established an interdisciplinary monitoring team... to check whether or not there is disclosure of the fetus's gender. If discovered, it will be strictly handled.
Currently, the sex ratio at birth in Quang Ngai is 108.9 males/100 females. To maintain the natural balance, the Quang Ngai health sector is promoting, changing awareness and saying "no" to gender disclosure.
