In every flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of the week or in homeroom classes, teachers remind students of the smallest things, such as throwing trash in the right place, keeping the classroom clean, sorting trash for effective reuse, etc. From there, shaping their awareness of responsibility towards the surrounding living environment. This form of slow and steady rain gradually has a positive impact on students' thinking from elementary school to university. Many students are interested in learning about the environment and the problems people face when the environment is polluted, etc.
Phan Nguyen Yen Ly, a 9E student at Nguyen Thai Binh Secondary School ( Ca Mau City), said: "The school regularly disseminates information about environmental, air, and water pollution, which helps us understand its importance and danger, so we are aware of participating in its protection."
Luu Manh Dat, a fourth-year student majoring in Accounting at Binh Duong University, Ca Mau Branch, said: “Small tasks right from school will help us be more aware of environmental protection and help young people today raise their awareness of environmental protection because the earth is currently warming up, and there are many problems that humans are facing. Only by being aware and knowing how to cultivate a love for the environment will we be determined and highly motivated to join hands to protect the living environment that is facing many risks of pollution.”
Not only is environmental education integrated into lessons and subjects, but extracurricular activities for students at all levels are also integrated with many meaningful environmental education contents in vivid visual forms. Typical examples include English speaking contests on the environment, recycled fashion shows, creating models to collect plastic bottles, etc. Each activity provides new and interesting knowledge and creates conditions for students to take practical actions to understand the value of what they are learning and need to promote more every day in environmental protection.

Phan Nghi Hao, a 9G student at Nguyen Thai Binh Secondary School, shared: “At my school, there are many movements, such as a small plan to collect plastic cans, bottles, and scrap paper, which will partly protect the environment and help students in difficult circumstances; launching a movement to plant trees, flower beds, etc. All of which contribute to protecting the environment. Regarding plastic waste, the school always lets students know about the harmful effects of plastic waste and encourages students to limit their use of plastic waste. During activities, my friends and I also learn about recycling plastic bottles, plastic bags, etc. into useful school supplies or household items.”
Ha Tien, a fourth-year student majoring in Economic Law at Binh Duong University, Ca Mau Branch, said: “My school has fish models to collect plastic bottles to sell to raise funds for the school’s social welfare activities. In addition, the school has a social work team that carries out volunteer campaigns, Green Sundays to collect trash around the school and places with a lot of trash. In addition, the school’s social work club also periodically launches Green Sundays to clean up the school grounds, plant trees, and take care of flower beds. In addition, the club coordinates with ward groups to collect trash, remove billboards, and educate people about environmental protection.”

Spreading and educating environmental protection awareness in schools has been contributing significantly to the cause of environmental protection for the whole population. Mr. Nguyen Van Thi, Secretary and Head of the Youth Union of Nguyen Thai Binh Secondary School, said: “In addition to ideological education lessons, the school always seeks new competitions for students to participate in with environmental protection awareness and has received very positive responses from students. In the near future, the school will have plans to organize more interesting and innovative competitions on environmental protection, especially participating in competitions launched by higher levels.”
For preschool children, teachers work with parents to shape good habits for children, including lessons on environmental protection and combating plastic waste through lectures and practical activities. For example, early in the morning around 8am, children will be guided to pick up trash around the school grounds. Or watch movies and reports on environmental pollution and waste issues to help children distinguish between clean and dirty environments. In addition, teachers guide children to make fashion outfits from recycled materials, make vases and pencil cases from discarded plastic materials that the children ask for from their families.

Ms. Phan Mai Phuong, Binh Minh Kindergarten, Hoa Tan Commune, Ca Mau City, said: “The school continues to educate about environmental protection through flag-raising activities, homeroom classes, and team work topics. Through such sessions, children are aware of environmental protection, throwing trash in the right place, sorting trash, and reusing plastic materials to make toys. Through parent meetings, the school promotes waste materials to parents, and parents are very supportive of waste materials so that teachers can guide their children to make toys.”
Through positive solutions and specific activities, students’ awareness of environmental protection has been significantly raised. They are the most active volunteers in the future, helping the environment improve day by day./.
