On August 23, the People's Committee of Thai Binh province held a conference to announce the location, boundaries, and area of the Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Thai Binh Provincial People's Committee Lai Van Hoan said that in 2014, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision approving the Project and establishing a special-use forest area of 12,500 hectares named Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve. However, the scope, location, and area were only qualitative and lacked consistency.

Now that all the necessary conditions have been met, and to suit the actual circumstances, Thai Binh province has proceeded to establish the location, boundaries, and area of the conservation zone and issued a decision to maintain the original area.
Accordingly, the conservation area is located outside dikes No. 5 and No. 6 of Tien Hai district; bordered to the north by the Tra Ly estuary and the planned Con Vanh - Con Thu urban service area; to the south by the Ba Lat estuary and the planned Con Vanh - Con Thu urban service area; to the west by the planned high-tech aquaculture area, the planned Con Vanh - Con Thu urban service area, the reclaimed land area and the planned Dong Chau coastal town; and to the east by the East Sea.
The boundaries of the conservation area are defined by 33 coordinate points with a total area of 12,500 hectares, of which the strictly protected zone occupies 2,726 hectares and the ecological restoration zone occupies 9,774 hectares. The buffer zone, with an area of 3,446.5 hectares, is defined by 40 coordinate points, located 1,000 meters from the conservation area boundary.
Thai Binh province will focus on allocating resources to continue and develop the conservation area. Provincial leaders expressed their hope that central ministries and agencies would provide support in terms of expertise, resources, programs and projects, and that businesses and the people would join hands in conservation efforts.

Reporting at the ceremony, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Van Chien said that the conservation area has 590.7 hectares of mangrove forest. The forest in the conservation area is contiguous, with trees growing and developing well and a diverse range of mangrove species (Sonneratia caseolaris, Avicennia marina, Sonneratia caseolaris, Bruguiera spp., Rhizophora apiculata ...
"Previous investigations and studies in the Tien Hai coastal wetland area have shown that this area has about 600 animal species living in mangrove forests, tidal flats, and estuarine coastal waters. Among them, there are two migratory waterbird species that overwinter here, listed as endangered, rare, and precious, and are prioritized for protection, such as the spoonbill and the spoon-billed sandpiper."

In addition to its value in nature conservation, the Tien Hai wetland area also has significant economic value for the coastal region. It is home to and a breeding ground for many economically valuable aquatic and marine species. The natural coastal fisheries resources annually provide a stable and sustainable income for many coastal residents.
"The multi-purpose value of mangrove forests creates enormous potential for the development of ecotourism and carbon sequestration. They also serve as places for learning and scientific research, and as repositories of the unique animal and plant genetic resources of the estuary and coastal areas," Mr. Chien shared.
Clarifying information regarding a 90% reduction in the area of Tien Hai Nature Reserve : The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has requested the People's Committee of Thai Binh province to clarify information reported by the press regarding the Tien Hai Nature Reserve.
