South Korea expands Korean language education, doubling in size in 10 years

The new center will play a role in analyzing the education system and the need for teaching Korean at the elementary, middle and high school levels in countries around the world.

On that basis, the center will develop a strategy to popularize Korean suitable for each country and region, and at the same time support capacity building for Korean language teachers abroad, aiming at the long-term goal of helping Korean language teaching and learning to operate locally.

The Korean Ministry of Education began supporting Korean language classes in American schools in 1999, making efforts to introduce Korean into official teaching in elementary and secondary schools around the world . As a result, the scale of Korean language education abroad has more than doubled in the past 10 years.

In November 2024, Seoul announced a plan to “Promote Korean Language Education in Overseas Elementary and Middle Schools” and decided to establish a Korean Language Education Support Center overseas. Earlier this year, after a selection process, the International Korean Language Education Foundation was designated as the center’s operator.
