The new center will play a role in analyzing the education system and the teaching needs of Korean language at the elementary, middle, and high school levels in countries around the world.
Based on this, the center will develop a strategy for popularizing the Korean language tailored to each country and region, while also supporting the capacity building of Korean language teachers abroad, with the long-term goal of enabling Korean language teaching and learning to operate independently locally.
The South Korean Ministry of Education began supporting the opening of Korean language classes in American schools in 1999, striving to introduce Korean as an official language of instruction in elementary and secondary schools worldwide . As a result, the scale of Korean language education abroad has more than doubled in the past 10 years.
In November 2024, Seoul announced a plan to "Promote Korean language education in elementary and secondary schools abroad," and decided to establish a center to support Korean language education overseas. Earlier this year, after a selection process, the International Korean Language Education Foundation was designated as the center's operating unit.
