Many voters in Wisconsin, USA, received text messages last week instructing them "not to vote in a place where you are not eligible."
CNN, citing a letter sent to U.S. justice officials on October 15 by the non-profit organization Free Speech For People, reported that thousands of Wisconsin voters received anonymous threatening messages last week, discouraging them from voting. “Warning: Violations of Sections 12.13 and 6.18 of the Wisconsin Act may result in a $10,000 fine or 3.5 years in jail. Do not vote in states where you are not eligible,” one anonymous message read.

It is known that sections 12.13 and 6.18 in the anonymous text message refer to Wisconsin state law governing absentee voting and the consequences of election fraud. However, the latter part of the message, "Do not vote," has raised concerns among voter protection groups. These groups argue that it is "a threat and will deter many young voters from voting out of fear." The recipients of these messages were mostly young people aged 18-25, including members of the Wisconsin Women Voters League and many voters within the University of Wisconsin system.
