The "child hunting" journey of a mother with reduced ovarian reserve

NDO - The rate of infertile women due to decreased ovarian reserve is getting younger and younger. The dream of becoming a mother for many people is becoming more challenging and some people have to go through multiple rounds of in vitro fertilization to successfully "hunt for a child".

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health , each year Vietnam has about 1 million infertile couples, of which more than 50% are young people under 30 years old. Among them are cases of infertility due to decreased ovarian reserve. There are even cases of women only 20, 21 years old but the AMH index is only 0.01. The journey to find the cry of a baby for these women becomes more difficult than ever.

After only 1 year of marriage, at the age of 21, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong received a big shock - her ovarian reserve index (AMH) was only 0.01, a number so low that it almost ended her dream of becoming a mother. The difficulties did not stop there, she also discovered that one of her fallopian tubes was blocked, so it was very difficult to get pregnant naturally. The doctor advised the couple to perform assisted reproductive methods such as: intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF).

After 3 years of perseverance, undergoing fallopian tube surgery and putting her faith in 5 IUI injections, her "child hunting" journey still failed.

In 2018, through an introduction, hope was rekindled when Ms. Huong's family learned about the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital. Specialist Doctor I Pham Van Huong, Deputy Director of the Department, was very concerned about the difficult problem of Ms. Huong's case, because her ovarian reserve was low, the chance of creating an embryo was very slim. However, seeing the couple's burning desire, the doctor both encouraged and gave detailed advice and protocols to help the family understand the IVF process.

The months of waiting for ovulation stimulation were a series of nervous days, because not every cycle had follicles, some months had no follicles, some months had only one follicle. But finally, a miracle appeared. With two small follicles, the couple had two embryos on day 3. On the day of the beta HCG test, the moment they saw the good results, both husband and wife hugged each other and cried. After 6 years of waiting, the couple was able to touch their dream of becoming parents.

During her pregnancy, in addition to the attentive care from her family, Ms. Huong always felt the care from the hospital. On March 17, 2019, the moment her little daughter Nguyen Anh Duong was born erased all the hardships and difficulties of the past. Baby Anh Duong, the name is exactly the meaning that the couple wanted to convey, she is an angel that brings light and hope to the small family.

In 2023, when Anh Duong was grown up, the couple decided to return to the Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital to continue their journey to welcome a new member. This time, Dr. Dao Van Kien, a specialist in Reproductive Support, was the one who directly examined the couple. Although Ms. Huong's AMH index was not as good as the previous time, with faith in the hospital's team of doctors, the couple did not hesitate to try one more time, hoping for a miracle.

The road ahead was still full of challenges as Ms. Huong had two follicles and could only create one embryo on day 3. However, thanks to the support of the doctors and the couple's strong faith, a miracle happened. That tiny embryo took root strongly and grew full of life. Happiness smiled on the family again when Ms. Huong received the good news of her second pregnancy, this was a perfect gift from love, perseverance and never giving up.

After a smooth pregnancy, on April 30, 2024 - the 49th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day, baby boy Nguyen Thang Dai cried out at birth. In that sacred moment, Thang and Huong's family not only felt their own happiness but also shared the joy of the whole nation.

Currently, the older child Anh Duong is 6 years old and preparing to enter first grade, and the younger child Thang Dai is about to turn 1 year old. After six years of waiting for a miracle, it is faith, patience and unity that has helped Ms. Huong's family overcome everything.

From May 12-25, 2025, Hanoi Andrology and Infertility Hospital will implement the program "Golden Week - Nurturing Happiness 2025" with the theme "Golden opportunity for the dream of finding a beloved child". Accordingly, the hospital will provide free consultation, ultrasound, semen analysis, uterine-fallopian tube imaging; reduce costs for in vitro fertilization, paraclinical testing... In addition, 10 couples with especially difficult circumstances nationwide will be exempted from 100% of the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) through the form of file review.
