In the first two training matches of the Vietnamese national team, the young players got little playing time. Nguyen Thai Son, in particular, was one of the players who only sat on the bench in both matches against Ulsan Citizen and Daegu FC.
It's understandable that coach Kim Sang-sik hasn't used all the players he brought to South Korea this time. Basically, using 30 players in a training match isn't easy. The South Korean coach wants to give all the players a chance to test them, but each personnel option also needs a certain amount of playing time to be proven.
In the final match against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, it is expected that the unused players will be on the field. In fact, coach Kim Sang-sik has already assessed the capabilities of the players he has called up. The only issue to evaluate is their ability to work together as a team.
Nguyen Thai Son is waiting for his chance to play.
The Vietnamese national team is in good shape in terms of personnel. There are no injured players, and the new players have integrated well, for example, Doan Ngoc Tan. The player born in 1994 has shown impressive adaptability despite never having played for the national team, not even at the youth level.
The attacking line is where the competition is fierce among the players. It's highly likely that after the Vietnamese national team returns home, coach Kim Sang-sik may call up two additional strikers, Nguyen Van Toan and Nguyen Xuan Son. Of these, Xuan Son has successfully obtained Vietnamese citizenship and is only awaiting confirmation from the Southeast Asian Football Federation. He is even considered the main striker for the Vietnamese national team.
At this point, only Pham Tuan Hai and Nguyen Tien Linh are somewhat "guaranteed" spots thanks to their high performance and composure shown in major tournaments. Thanh Binh, Quoc Viet, and Dinh Bac will have to compete for a place in the 2024 AFF Cup squad.
The Vietnamese national team has one more friendly match against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors (December 1st). After that, coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will return home and announce the 26-player squad before traveling to Laos for their opening match at the AFF Cup 2024.
