The decision to sack him was made by Bayer Leverkusen on the afternoon of September 1st, following a disappointing 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen in the second round of the Bundesliga.
Despite leading 3-1 and playing with a man advantage for the final 30 minutes, Ten Hag's team inexplicably conceded a goal and equalized. Prior to that, they had also disappointed by losing 1-2 at home to Hoffenheim in their season opener.
In a recent statement, the Dutch strategist said he was completely surprised by the decision. "Parting ways with a coach after only two league matches is unprecedented," he shared.
Ten Hag emphasized that building a new team requires time and patience, especially given that many key players left the club last summer.
"A new coach needs time to implement his vision, set standards, and leave his mark on the team's playing style," said Ten Hag.
Next, the Dutch coach also expressed his disappointment at not receiving enough trust from the management. He shared: "I started the job with all my belief and energy, but unfortunately the management wasn't willing to give me enough time and trust. I feel that this relationship was never built on mutual trust."
Ten Hag recalled past successes, asserting that the teams that had trusted him and given him opportunities had all won titles.
Concluding his statement, the former Leverkusen coach thanked the team's fans for their sincerity and enthusiasm, and wished the entire team and coaching staff much success in the remainder of the season.
Previously, German media outlets had been continuously reporting on the increasing pressure on coach Ten Hag over the past two weeks. According to these sources, the main reason for the hasty dismissal was that he had lost the support of the players and the management was dissatisfied with his tactical choices.
