According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the primary cause of this recall stems from a software error in the electronic control unit (ECU) that controls traction control, potentially causing vehicles to lose brake assist when cornering. The total number of affected vehicles could reach 51,000 across North America.
According to the report, Corolla Cross Hybrid models manufactured between June 2022 and September 2024 are the main vehicles affected by this recall. A software error in the ECU controller could disrupt brake fluid pressure regulation, leading to a stiff or temporarily unresponsive brake pedal when cornering. This could prolong stopping distances, increase the risk of collisions, and raise significant safety concerns.
The recall is reportedly due to a software error in the electronic control unit (ECU) that controls the traction control.
Toyota quickly provided a solution by offering a free ECU software update for affected vehicles. Owners of recalled vehicles will receive official notification from Toyota via mail starting in November 2024.
This isn't the first time the Corolla Cross has had safety issues in the US market. Previously, in late December 2023, approximately 12,600 Corolla Cross vehicles were recalled due to a manufacturing defect that could prevent airbags from deploying when needed. This raised many questions about the quality and reliability of this popular model.
The latest incident with the Corolla Cross Hybrid marks the third time in 2024 that Toyota has had to conduct large-scale recalls in the U.S. In May, more than 100,000 Toyota Tundra and Lexus LX vehicles were recalled for engine repairs.
With a series of recent vehicle recalls, Toyota is facing significant challenges regarding quality and safety. However, the Japanese automaker is also demonstrating its efforts to quickly resolve technical issues, ensuring the rights and safety of its customers.
