In October 2023, the Ministry of Education and Training issued regulations for the national excellent student selection exam with several new points. These included a maximum of 10 candidates per subject for each unit, except for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, which were limited to 20 candidates.
This regulation also stipulates that instead of organizing practical exams, the exam questions for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology will include questions requiring candidates to solve problems using knowledge related to experimental and practical skills.
Furthermore, the percentage of contestants winning prizes is 60% of the total number of contestants (compared to 50% in previous years); of which, the total number of first, second, and third prizes does not exceed 60% of the total number of prizes; the number of first prizes does not exceed 5% of the total number of prizes. This ratio ensures compliance with the regulations of regional and international Olympiads.
The new regulations also include provisions for issuing certificates of participation in the national-level gifted student selection exam to candidates who participated but did not win any prizes. This helps students retain long-term personal information about their participation in the exam.
The Ministry of Education and Training stated that the national excellent student selection exam is organized to motivate and encourage teachers and students to develop their creative abilities; contribute to promoting the improvement and enhancement of the quality of teaching and learning; and at the same time identify students with aptitude in a subject to create a pool for training, achieving the goal of training talented individuals for the country.
