Removing obstacles in durian production and consumption.

(DTO) On the morning of December 10th, in Binh Phu commune, Dong Thap province, the Plant Protection and Crop Production Sub-Department of Dong Thap province - Department of Agriculture and Environment organized a conference to guide the establishment of planting area codes and packaging facility codes.

The conference was attended by representatives from communes and wards with large durian growing areas; and approximately 70 cooperatives and businesses involved in durian production and purchasing in the province.

In his opening remarks at the conference, Tran Thanh Tam, Head of the Plant Protection and Quarantine Department of Dong Thap province, said that the province currently has about 35,000 hectares of durian orchards; of which, nearly 19,000 hectares are bearing fruit.

To date, the province has 350 agricultural products exported to China and 111 registered trademarks. Previously, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine did not provide guidance to packers and owners of agricultural products on the authorization process.

Following the merger of Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces into the new Dong Thap province, there is a need for general guidelines for organizations, individuals, and cooperatives to register new product codes, quality control codes, and to maintain and monitor growing areas and packaging facilities during operation to serve procurement and export.

At the conference, the Department of Plant Protection and Quarantine provided guidance on establishing new registrations, monitoring, and maintaining product identification codes; and the process of controlling food safety and quality for fresh durian for export.

Businesses express their opinions.

At the conference, businesses and cooperatives also raised difficulties and obstacles in the current durian production and export activities, such as: the need to publish a list of approved product codes; duplication of domestic and export product codes; the need for solutions to control cadmium levels in durian; and the limited number of laboratories for testing cadmium and yellow dye.

At the same time, we request that state management agencies find solutions to remove obstacles so that durian exports can proceed smoothly.

In response to the proposals from businesses and cooperatives, Comrade Tran Thanh Tam provided specific answers, information, and guidance to address difficulties in durian production and consumption.
