In the early morning of October 8th, FTSE Russell announced the upgrade of the Vietnamese stock market to a secondary emerging market. The upgrade will officially take effect on September 21st, 2026, following a mid-term review in March 2026. Recently, in a message, Gary Harron, Head of Securities Services at HSBC Vietnam, congratulated Vietnam on achieving this significant milestone by officially being upgraded from frontier to secondary emerging market by index provider FTSE Russell.
"The official upgrade announcement, effective from September 21, 2026, following the mid-term review in March 2026, is proof that Vietnam's rising international standing can firmly weather short-term storms. This new status is a recognition of the joint efforts of the Government , regulatory agencies, and market participants," he commented.
According to Gary Harron, removing the "frontier market" label would have a significant impact on investor behavior and confidence, altering the long-term economic trajectory of the market and reducing dependence on any single trading partner.
Previously, in a report to international investors, HSBC's Global Investment Research department predicted the potential for foreign capital inflows of up to US$3.4 billion to US$10.4 billion from active and passive investment funds following the upgrade. HSBC currently serves approximately half of international institutional investors in Vietnam.
"Looking further ahead, we are encouraged by the plans of the relevant authorities not only to be upgraded to emerging market status by MSCI but also to simultaneously promote the development of the domestic securities investment fund industry. We are committed to accompanying Vietnam and our clients on the journey to enhance the size and capacity of the market, taking advantage of the benefits from today's upgrade," an HSBC representative also affirmed the commitment to accompanying Vietnam on the journey to enhance the size and capacity of the market.
