In the early morning of October 8, FTSE Russell announced the upgrade of Vietnam's stock market to secondary emerging market. The upgrade will officially take effect from September 21, 2026 after the mid-term review in March 2026. Recently, in a recent message, Mr. Gary Harron, Head of Securities Services, HSBC Vietnam, congratulated Vietnam on achieving an important milestone when the index provider FTSE Russell officially upgraded the market from frontier to secondary emerging.
"The official announcement of the upgrade, effective from September 21, 2026, following the mid-term review in March 2026, is a testament to Vietnam's growing international standing and its ability to weather short-term headwinds. The new status is a recognition of the joint efforts of the Government , regulators and market participants," he said.
According to Mr. Gary Harron, removing the "frontier market" label will have a great impact on investor behavior and confidence, change the long-term economic development trajectory of the market and reduce dependence on any single trading partner.
Previously, in a report sent to international investors, HSBC Global Investment Research predicted that the potential foreign capital flow could reach 3.4 to 10.4 billion USD from active and passive investment funds after the upgrade. HSBC is currently the custodian bank serving about half of international institutional investors in Vietnam.
"Looking further, we are encouraged by the plans of the relevant authorities not only to be upgraded to emerging market status by MSCI but also to promote the development of the domestic securities investment fund industry. We are committed to accompanying Vietnam and our customers on the journey to improve the scale and capacity of the market, taking advantage of the benefits from today's upgrade," HSBC representative also affirmed the commitment to accompany Vietnam on the journey to improve the scale and capacity of the market.
