The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on January 31st called on countries to establish an "international vaccine bank" to prepare for the next pandemic.
In its newly released report, the IFRC considers the establishment of a pandemic vaccine bank as a condition for equitable access. Beyond this requirement, they want to prioritize vaccines and doctors for those working to ensure food security or public health. The IFRC also calls for an international campaign to convince people of the importance of protecting such workers.
According to IRFC, the organization conducted discussions with over 16,000 people, in coordination with dozens of national Red Cross societies. Individuals from the private sector and trade unions were also interviewed to gather information for the report. Furthermore, nearly 70% of respondents expressed concern about contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Additionally, respondents indicated they felt anxious about personal finances. However, nearly half of those surveyed who work in the healthcare sector felt they were discriminated against for working during the pandemic and largely did not have easy access to vaccines.
