The Indonesian Ministry of Environment (KLH) said it will officially launch an international carbon trading platform on January 20, 2025, contributing to promoting climate and sustainable development goals. The exact price per ton of carbon will be announced on the launch date. The launch of Indonesia's international carbon trading reflects the government's commitment to combating climate change.
At the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) last year, Indonesia invited global stakeholders, including businesses, to engage in carbon trading. Putting a price on carbon emissions and incentivizing greenhouse gas reductions can turn a climate challenge into an opportunity.
According to Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, the initiative is part of Indonesia's commitment to the Paris Agreement on climate change, established at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) in 2015. The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) will operate the platform under the name IDXCarbon.
According to Mr. Hanif, the carbon price is being proposed at a minimum of 8 USD/ton and can be changed but not much to suit the needs of partners, affirming that "carbon trading is not just a market mechanism but a bridge between economic growth and environmental management".
Mr. Hanif said that the carbon trading system aims to promote innovation, sustainable development and provide a platform for international cooperation towards a low-carbon future. Energy transition and NDC targets The COP framework emphasizes limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
Currently, 1.735 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent are available for trading. This represents cumulative emissions reductions from a number of strategic energy projects across Indonesia.
