Earlier, the earthquake occurred at 11:00 p.m. on September 8 (local time), with the epicenter in the High Atlas Mountains, 72 km southwest of the famous tourist city of Marrakech. The earthquake shook many cities in Morocco, causing many buildings to collapse.

This was the most severe earthquake in Morocco in decades, causing widespread damage.
