Dozens of fans are believed to have died after a football match honoring Guinea's military junta leader Mamadi Doumbouya in the city of N'Zerekore last weekend, according to the Daily Mail .

However, local media said the death toll could be as high as 100 and hospitals in N'Zerekore were overwhelmed. A local doctor, who did not want to be named, revealed that the bodies of the victims had to be left outside the hospital corridors.

Also according to Daily Mail, violence on the football field began to explode after a controversial decision by the referee, a crowd of overexcited fans flooded onto the field leading to fights and causing great casualties.

Videos posted on social media also showed chaotic scenes inside and outside the stadium in N'Zerekore. Bodies were strewn across the streets.

The protesters even vandalized and burned a police station near the stadium. Protests later turned violent in several cities in Guinea.

N'Zerekore is Guinea's second largest city and is located in the southeast of the country. The city has a population of around 200,000 people.

Guinea has been under military control since a military government took power in a coup in September 2021.

In early 2024, the military government in Guinea dissolved the country's government , but did not give a reason for the move or a deadline for announcing a new government.
