The United Nations has just appealed for more than $4 billion in humanitarian aid to address the food insecurity situation in Syria.
UN humanitarian coordinator Adam Abdelmoula warned that funding is nearly exhausted and a lack of support will push more Syrians into displacement. Around 12.9 million people are facing food insecurity nationwide. Inaction means at least 2.5 million children will lose the opportunity to return to school, and approximately 2.3 million women of childbearing age could lose access to essential maternal and child health services.
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the ongoing conflict has displaced approximately 14 million people. The situation in Syria is seen as deteriorating in most areas and risks spiraling out of control.
