Trying famous dishes at one of the world's oldest restaurants, YouTuber Khoai Lang Thang makes a surprising suggestion.
During his trip to Spain, YouTuber Khoai Lang Thang (Dinh Vo Hoai Phuong) visited Madrid to explore interesting places, including the world's oldest restaurant, nearly 300 years old.
Khoai Lang Thang started his Madrid experience at 9 am on Saturday with an outdoor temperature of 3-4 degrees Celsius. Many shops were still closed because they had stayed very late the day before. Spaniards usually have lunch around 2 pm.
While walking down a street lined with poems – where verses are written directly on the pavement – the YouTuber stopped at an eatery and bought a ham and ham sandwich (Jamon) for breakfast. Jamon is a familiar and popular dish in Spain, known for its slightly salty, tart, and slightly sour taste.
Legend has it that a pig fell into a salt vat, was rescued, roasted, and tasted. People found the meat to be delicious and distinctive. From that, Jamon was born.

To make this dish, people usually choose large pork legs, weighing at least 10kg, remove the skin, then salt and preserve them at a temperature of 3-6 degrees Celsius for a long time, up to a year. The longer the salted pork leg is preserved, the more valuable it becomes.
The pigs used to make Jamon are typically black pigs, fed on olives and acorns, and raised on large pastures.
After visiting the Place de la Sun – one of Madrid's most famous squares – the YouTuber stepped into the city's oldest pastry shop to buy a bag of cookies.
This shop, established in 1894, sells a wide variety of pastries at reasonable prices – from 1-2 Euros (approximately 26,000 - 52,000 VND) per piece. Some are sold by weight at 24 Euros (over 640,000 VND) per kilogram. He commented that these prices are cheap compared to the general price level in Madrid.
Besides pastries, the shop also sells coffee and tea. If you want to sit on the second floor to eat pastries and drink tea, you have to take a number and wait your turn because space is limited.

Before visiting the world's oldest restaurant, Khoai Lang Thang also stopped at a small eatery to try the famous Chirizo grilled mushrooms. This dish is prepared quite quickly, consisting of button mushrooms drizzled with olive oil, chorizo, and herbs, then grilled in the oven.
"The grilled mushrooms have a sweet flavor, and the sauce is slightly salty and tangy. The mushrooms are grilled to perfection, not too soft. You can break pieces of bread to dip into the sauce," he shared.
The YouTuber's final destination was the old quarter – formerly known for selling knives and cutlery. Today, this area is bustling with shops and restaurants. Many of these long-standing businesses are officially recognized by the government. Each shop has a sign attached to its door for easy identification by tourists.
One of the oldest establishments here is the Sobrino de Botín restaurant, which has been operating since 1725, almost 300 years ago. Currently, the restaurant is run by the Gonzalez family.
The restaurant was reportedly founded by French chef Jean Botín and his wife. They passed away without children, so the restaurant was taken over by Mrs. Botín's grandson. Since then, the restaurant has been named "Sobrino de Botín" (meaning: Botín's grandson). Today, the restaurant is run by the third generation of the Gonzalez family, Antonio and Jose Gonzalez.
Here, the 18th-century charcoal stove is still in operation.

This place is not only famous for its long and continuous operation, but also for its historical significance. The writer Ernest Hemingway was a regular at this restaurant when he was in Madrid reporting on the Spanish Civil War. He even had a private table on the second floor, where he spent hours typing and drinking. The restaurant's name even appears in his books.
Botín's most famous dish is roasted suckling pig.
To get a table here, diners usually have to book 2-3 days in advance. But luckily, Khoai wandered here around 12 noon – not yet the busiest time for locals – so he was still able to get a seat.
From his observation, the restaurant was mostly filled with Asian customers at this time, as it was lunchtime for Asians.
The restaurant's menu offers a variety of dishes, with prices ranging from 10-30 Euros (over 266,000-800,000 VND), and some dishes costing 100 Euros (over 2.6 million VND). The YouTuber ordered a roasted suckling pig dish priced at 25 Euros (over 667,000 VND), which included a fairly large piece of roasted pig and a few baked potatoes.

"The pork skin is very crispy and fluffy, the meat is tender, juicy, and the muscle fibers are very distinct. It tastes similar to chicken thigh meat, but from a young chicken." Khoai Lang Thang also commented that this dish is quite similar to Vietnamese roast pork but with less seasoning.
And of course, the roasted suckling pig here is roasted in the restaurant's famous charcoal oven. After finishing his meal, he commented that the first few bites were actually very delicious. But the more he ate, the more he felt satiated because the portion was quite large and lacked green vegetables.
Therefore, he suggests that diners order a salad with this dish to balance the flavors and nutrients.
