On October 18, the Russian tactical aviation set a record for the number of guided glide bombs (KAB) used in a single day on the Ukrainian battlefield, with a total of 268. This information was stated in the report as of 8:00 a.m. on October 18, published by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian media reported that in the past 24 hours, Russian tactical aviation used more glide bombs than on any other day during the entire conflict. “According to updated information, yesterday Russian warplanes carried out 109 airstrikes on Ukrainian territory, dropping 268 guided bombs,” the Ukrainian General Staff said.
Specifically, the statement refers to the attacks of guided bombs (KAB) on targets in the Sumy region. “When the Ukrainian army no longer has any weapons that can be difficult for the Su-34 aircraft, all that remains is to record new achievements of the enemy”; a Ukrainian citizen commented on the above report of the General Staff of the Ukrainian army. In addition to KAB bombs, the Russian Armed Forces (RFAF) also used more than six thousand FPV UAVs in attacks. In total, over the past 24 hours, 128 frontline engagements and nearly five thousand attacks on units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and other targets were recorded, of which 117 were carried out with multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS). Meanwhile, the AFU also announced that they had attacked seven RFAF troop, weapons and military equipment concentrations. AFU fighters were also attempting to use guided bombs, but in much smaller numbers and with less success. Previously, on the Internet, there was also a video of a Su-34 fighter jet of the Russian Air Force carrying out an attack with a UMPK guided glide bomb on a bridge in the village of Pokrovskoe, Dnipropetrovsk region. Pokrovskoe is an important logistics center of the Ukrainian army in the east of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast, where Ukraine maintains supply lines to a large AFU defense zone, located further south, near Huliaipole in the Zaporizhzhia region.
As seen in the released video, the bridge was hit by at least two UMPK glide bombs, causing significant damage to the bridge deck. According to the video, the bridge is currently unusable. Meanwhile, the RFAF continued to advance into the Dnipropetrovsk region, gradually approaching Pokrovskoe. The RFAF's approach to the highway between Pokrovskoe and Huliaipole would threaten both of the AFU's main defense areas there. Aware of this, the AFU General Staff was concentrating its forces there, trying to prevent the Russians from breaking through deep into the Dnipropetrovsk region. On the southern side of the area, the Russians were advancing along the main AFU defense line, fighting was taking place at Vyshneve after they took control of Verbove. Therefore, it can be said that after the battle at Yanvarske, the main AFU defense line here was breached by the Russians. Meanwhile, north of Pokrovskoe, AFU fortifications are few or even non-existent; so this area is basically incapable of repelling RFAF breakthroughs. Most likely, AFU is now hastily trying to establish defensive battle positions there, but it is unlikely to be completed before winter sets in. On the northern Donetsk front, Russian tactical aviation once again attacked an AFU pontoon bridge over the Seversky Donets River. A half-ton glide bomb completely destroyed the military pontoon bridge in the village of Raygorodok in the Lyman direction. Raygorodok is located about 10 kilometers from the AFU-controlled city of Slovyansk.
The released video shows that the attack by the Russian tactical air force hit the middle span of the bridge, destroying two sections of the PMP-M field pontoon bridge, damaging the joints and the retaining cables. As a result of the bombing, the middle section of the bridge was submerged, and the right bank span was pushed out by the current. Traces of a crack, scorched floor parts and destroyed support beams can be seen at the scene. The road from Slovyansk to Lyman is currently unusable and the transfer of AFU reserves is also impossible. The precarious situation of the AFU was further aggravated by the threat of encirclement of the Ukrainian garrison in the city of Lyman. Without this pontoon bridge, the Ukrainian troops in Lyman would have no way to retreat. The AFU repeatedly rebuilt the pontoon bridge, only to be subjected to further attacks by UMPK glide bombs of the Russian Air Force.
Earlier, the Russian Air Force used the FAB-3000 super bomb on an AFU target in the Zaporizhzhia region. The attack with the three-ton super bomb destroyed an AFU troop assembly point on the premises of a poultry farm in the village of Uspenivka, Zaporizhzhia region.
