On September 14th, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Head of the Education and Training Department of Quang Ngai City, stated that the information claiming he received 30 million VND for securing a place in the 6th grade at Nguyen Nghiem Secondary School was false.

Mr. Hung explained that, according to the decision approving the enrollment plan for grade 6 in the 2024-2025 school year by the People's Committee of Quang Ngai city, Nguyen Nghiem Secondary School was allocated a quota of 326 students for 8 classes.

This target is based on the number of 5th grade students in the 2023-2024 school year in Nguyen Nghiem ward.

The 2024-2025 school year will be the first year that Quang Ngai city implements the policy that 5th-grade students from each ward or commune will be admitted to the 6th grade of the secondary school in that ward or commune.

For special cases, such as families or parents from outside Quang Ngai city moving to reside or work in Quang Ngai city, the department will seek the opinion of the Quang Ngai City People's Committee before accepting them.

For Nguyen Nghiem Secondary School, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school enrolled 325 students, one less than the approved target. This school did not accept any students from outside its designated catchment area.

According to Mr. Hung, the enrollment quota for 6th grade in the 2024-2025 school year at Nguyen Nghiem Secondary School has not increased, and there are no 5th grade students transferring from other schools. Therefore, there cannot be any school-buying as reported on social media.

On September 3rd, several Facebook groups in Quang Ngai posted information stating that to secure a place at Nguyen Nghiem Secondary School, parents had to pay 30 million VND or more to the Head of the Education and Training Department of Quang Ngai City.

This information was shared by many social media users and received mixed reactions.

According to Mr. Hung, the content posted on social media is slanderous and damages his personal reputation. Furthermore, this information also negatively impacts the education sector in Quang Ngai city.

Therefore, Mr. Hung reported the matter to the leaders of the Quang Ngai City People's Committee and requested the police to investigate and track down the person who posted the defamatory information.

"The police have verified the information and requested several social media sites to remove the shared content. Because the person who posted the information used a fake account, the police are continuing their investigation," Mr. Hung informed.

For many years, enrollment for entry-level classes at several schools in the Nguyen Nghiem, Tran Hung Dao, Tran Phu, and Chanh Lo wards of the city has been quite intense. This has been accompanied by reports of many parents having to "pull strings" to secure a school for their children.

Speaking to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper , Mr. Tra Thanh Danh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai city, said that he had received information about the incident.

According to Mr. Danh, this information affects the reputation of the education sector in Quang Ngai city. Therefore, the People's Committee of Quang Ngai city has directed the City Inspectorate to monitor and verify the information regarding the incident.

"The city inspectorate will take measures within its authority to review the case. Based on that, the inspectorate will advise the City People's Committee on how to handle it," Mr. Danh said.
