Kyrgyzstan calls on citizens to limit travel to Russia

VnExpressVnExpress27/03/2024

In a recommendation issued earlier this week, the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry stated that, in the event of needing to travel to Russia, its citizens should ensure they always carry all necessary documents and comply with all legal requests from the local police.

"Russia is implementing counter-terrorism measures by tightening immigration controls for people arriving from abroad," Bakyt Kadyrov, a senior diplomat and deputy head of the consular department of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry , said on March 25.

Kyrgyzstan's warning comes amid reports that Russian police are stepping up checks on the records of migrants from Tajikistan and other Central Asian countries, a group that makes up a large portion of the migrant workforce in Russia. Uzbekistan had previously issued a similar recommendation to its citizens currently in or planning to travel to Russia, according to local media.

Seven suspects arrested in the terrorist attack have been identified as Tajik citizens. A man of Kyrgyz origin was also detained on March 26 pending trial on charges of providing accommodation to the Tajik suspects.

Hundreds of thousands of Central Asians now work in Russia, and some say the terrorist attacks have made life more difficult for them there. Some travelers refused to get into taxis driven by Tajiks. Many passengers flying to Moscow from the Turkmen capital were not allowed to board their planes.

The Tajik embassy in Moscow last weekend urged its citizens to avoid crowded places, while the President of Kazakhstan ordered increased security measures in the country following the deadly terrorist attacks in Russia.
