Spreading the power of communication in the journey of energy saving

Media is becoming a "soft energy source" that contributes to spreading awareness, arousing community responsibility, and promoting energy-saving actions.

In the process of green development and low emissions, communication is considered a “new energy source” that contributes to changing awareness and promoting energy-saving actions throughout society. After more than 5 years of implementing the National Program on Economical and Efficient Energy Use (VNEEP 3), Vietnam has achieved many positive results, and at the same time identified communication work as a key factor to achieve the goal of saving at least 7-10% of total national energy consumption by 2030.

Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Industry and Trade Newspaper Nguyen Tien Cuong said that Vietnam has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 at COP 26, 27 and 28. This is not only an international responsibility, but also a driving force for the country to transform its growth model, towards a green and low-carbon economy . He emphasized: “Energy saving, especially electricity saving, is the most practical, effective and long-term solution to reduce supply pressure, reduce costs and protect the environment.”

According to a survey by VNEEP 3, Vietnam’s energy saving potential is still very large, especially in the industrial sector – accounting for more than 50% of the country’s total energy consumption – with the ability to save 20-30%. If each enterprise reduces its electricity consumption by 2%, the whole country can save about 1.6 billion kWh per year, equivalent to more than 3,200 billion VND.

The Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Industry and Trade Newspaper affirmed that communication work is an important “key” in this journey. Accurate and relevant information will help spread awareness, arouse social responsibility, and promote changes in energy usage behavior. Energy journalists need to understand both the technology and know how to tell inspirational stories.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has organized many training courses for reporters and editors to update policies and working skills, spread the spirit of "Saving energy - acting for a sustainable future", demonstrating close coordination between management agencies, the electricity industry and the press in communication work.

A representative of the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) said that in the 2023-2025 period, the unit has synchronously deployed many electricity saving solutions according to the direction of the Government , the Ministry of Industry and Trade and EVN, striving to reduce at least 2% of commercial electricity annually.

EVNSPC has produced more than 2,100 news, articles and propaganda clips on press platforms and social networks. Programs such as “Saving electricity in schools” and “Family saving electricity” have been widely deployed, helping students and the community form the habit of using electricity efficiently. The unit has also signed electricity saving agreements with more than 339,000 customers, supporting businesses to invest in rooftop solar power, high-efficiency equipment and energy-saving lighting.

In particular, the Load Adjustment (DR) program – which encourages businesses to shift their electricity usage to off-peak hours – has attracted nearly 5,000 large businesses to participate, contributing to reducing peak capacity and stabilizing the power system. Thanks to that, the electricity savings reached more than 2,000 million kWh per year, equivalent to a savings of over 2.4% of total commercial electricity.

EVNSPC representative emphasized: “Energy efficiency not only brings economic benefits but is also a social responsibility, a practical action to protect the environment and move towards Vietnam's goal of net zero emissions.”

EVNSPC considers customers as the center, providing technical advice and supporting the application of high-performance technology, while innovating multi-platform communication - from social networks, customer care applications to short videos - helping the message "Saving electricity - become a habit" spread strongly in the community.

According to Chairman of the Vietnam Energy Conservation and Efficiency Association Nguyen Dinh Hiep, access to capital for energy saving projects is still difficult, and Vietnam has not yet formed a truly efficient energy market. Meanwhile, many countries have successfully developed the energy service enterprise (ESCO) model - a "benefit sharing" mechanism to help the private sector boldly invest in energy saving solutions.

Currently, there are more than 500 ESCO enterprises operating effectively in the world, but in Vietnam, the legal framework and support policies are still lacking in synchronization. Mr. Hiep said that there should be a breakthrough financial mechanism, preferential credit and a separate support fund to encourage enterprises to invest in this field.

Regarding the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy (amended) recently passed by the National Assembly, Mr. Hiep highly appreciated new points such as: strengthening the responsibility of local authorities, adding regulations on energy labeling for equipment, expanding the scope of application to the fields of construction, transportation and establishing the Fund for Economical and Efficient Use of Energy - an extra-budgetary financial fund to support investment projects and mobilize socialized capital.

According to Mr. Hiep, the law amendment needs to aim at developing an efficient energy market, focusing on enterprises, encouraging public-private partnerships (PPP) and closely linked to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable development by 2045.

From international commitments to domestic actions, Vietnam is building a culture of energy saving – in which communication is the power to spread, connect and arouse the sense of responsibility of each individual, business and community.
