At approximately 9:30 AM on September 29th, a serious landslide occurred on the embankment between Km 240+300 and Km 240+600 of National Highway 2 in Bac Quang district, Ha Giang province.
The scene of the landslide.
The estimated volume of soil and rocks that collapsed was over 30,000 cubic meters, causing traffic disruption on National Highway 2; the landslide buried several houses and damaged some vehicles.
One person has died after being buried under rubble inside their house, and two people who were traveling on the road were buried by a landslide and are missing.
The leaders of the Vietnam Road Administration immediately went to the scene to supervise and inspect the road transport units' coordination with local authorities in search and rescue operations and disaster relief.
Present at the scene, leaders of the Department of Roads and Road Management Area I directed the contractor managing the road to mobilize four excavators to the scene to search for victims and promptly clear the landslide debris on the road to allow temporary traffic flow. They also directed subordinate units to carry out search and rescue operations and mitigate the consequences of the natural disaster; and instructed officers to maintain a 24/7 presence at checkpoints to regulate and ensure traffic flow.
However, because the two victims are still buried under the landslide debris, a large amount of excavation and clearing work at the scene has not been completed; moreover, last night (September 29th to 30th) there was continued heavy rain in Bac Quang district, Ha Giang province, forcing search and rescue and disaster relief forces to temporarily suspend operations at night.
The Ha Giang Department of Transport has coordinated with the Road Management Area I to reroute traffic through alternative routes to avoid the landslide area.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ha Giang province, was present at the scene.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Road Administration, said that he has instructed Road Management Area I to direct Company 232 (the unit responsible for regular maintenance on the route) to mobilize maximum manpower and equipment for construction.
The unit needs to urgently carry out the work of clearing the landslides at both ends of the road section, ensuring initial traffic flow, with traffic expected to resume on October 1, 2024.
"Throughout the construction process, the construction unit must always have a patrol team on duty to ensure safety before construction can begin. They must coordinate with the police and military forces to warn of landslides and ensure safe construction," Mr. Anh requested.
