C HAS MANY STRENGTHS

On December 10, there will be a total of 6 medal events. The 3 events for men are 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley. The female athletes will also compete in 3 events: 200m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay and 50m breaststroke. The Vietnamese swimming team will send 5 athletes to participate: Hung Nguyen, Quang Thuan (200m individual medley), Jeremie Luong (100m freestyle), My Tien (200m butterfly), and Thuy Hien (50m breaststroke). The qualifying round will start at 9am and the final round at 6pm on the same day. All will take place at the swimming pool at Huamark Sports Complex (Bangkok).

5 out of 6 events are not the strong points of Vietnamese swimmers. Especially in the women's events, since Anh Vien retired, Vietnamese swimming has not been able to compete with Thailand, the Philippines and especially Singapore. At the 32nd SEA Games, female swimmers from the Lion Island dominated, winning a total of 13 gold medals out of 19 events. At that time, Vietnamese swimming only won 2 bronze medals thanks to My Tien (800m freestyle) and Thuy Hien (100m freestyle). Therefore, we can hardly expect Vietnamese female swimmers to win medals on the first day.

The most likely candidate to win the gold medal on the first day is Hung Nguyen. The Army athlete dominated the 200m individual medley event in Southeast Asia when he won gold medals in 3 consecutive SEA Games (30, 31, 32). Quang Thuan is also expected to win a medal in this event. Anh Vien's younger brother is gradually improving and could become Hung Nguyen's rival in the future. What Thuan needs to do most is to maintain his mental state to be ready to explode.

Meanwhile, in short distances like 100m, Singapore is almost overwhelming. Hung Nguyen is also very good at backstroke and this is the swimming style that he considers himself the best at, but he is only capable of competing for a medal at the 200m distance. At the 32nd SEA Games, Hung Nguyen won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2 minutes 01 seconds 34, slightly behind Thai athlete Tonnam Kanteemool (2 minutes 01 seconds 29).

HUNG N GUYEN IS EXCITED

Hung Nguyen personally had quite good preparation. At the 2025 Asian Swimming Championship, he won medals in two of his favorite events: bronze medal in the 200m medley (2 minutes 02 seconds 71, behind the Taiwanese and mainland Chinese athletes) and silver medal in the 400m medley (4 minutes 20 seconds 30, only behind the Chinese athlete), almost reaching the achievement that helped him conquer 2 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games.

Tran Hung Nguyen practices at SEA Games 33

During the recent training trip to Nanning (China), Hung Nguyen said he has improved a lot in many aspects, from his physical condition, competitive feeling to his performance thanks to the favorable living conditions here. Thanks to that, Hung Nguyen is very confident. He shared with Thanh Nien reporter: "When I arrived and saw many strong opponents, I naturally felt ready to fight."

Hopefully Hung Nguyen and Quang Thuan will maintain their form, while Jeremie Luong, My Tien, and Thuy Hien will explode together, causing surprises to bring home the first gold medals for Vietnamese swimming at the 33rd SEA Games.
