According to the police, after being arrested, Lam Van Dao (34 years old, residing in Ea Tu commune, Buon Ma Thuot city) - owner of Lam Dao Trading Company Limited confessed that he started making bean sprouts in 2020 and often went on social networks to discuss and exchange.

Through discussions with previous workers, Dao learned that they used "candy water" to produce bean sprouts, so he followed suit, even though he knew this substance was not good for the health of the user.

“I bought the ‘candy water’ from someone in Ho Chi Minh City and knew it was a root killer to make bean sprouts have fewer roots and thicker stems,” Dao confessed.

Dao admitted that he started delivering goods to Bach Hoa Xanh from May 2024 until the time he was arrested by the police.

To get his goods into Bach Hoa Xanh, Dao printed packaging, labels, and labeled the bean sprouts with expiration dates and packaged them. Every day, Dao's facility sells more than 300kg of bean sprouts to Bach Hoa Xanh.

Dao is also the owner of two bean sprout production facilities, and both facilities were discovered by the police to be using banned substances to soak and incubate bean sprouts.

Meanwhile, Vu Duy Tu (33 years old, residing in Tan Hoa ward, Buon Ma Thuot city) confessed that when he first started making bean sprouts, someone instructed him on how to buy "candy water" and tools.

When he became proficient, Tu went online to order “candy water” in Ho Chi Minh City. Each time, Tu would buy 2-5 boxes of “candy water” to use gradually.

“I know that using this substance to make bean sprouts will affect other people’s health, but I still do it. Every day, my factory produces about 2.2 tons of bean sprouts to sell to wholesale markets. I know my actions are wrong and hope for leniency from the law,” Tu said.

Previously, on the morning of December 26, Dak Lak Provincial Police informed that they had prosecuted and temporarily detained Lam Van Dao (born 1990); Vu Duy Tu (born 1991), Nguyen Van Quynh (born 1973) and Nguyen Van Hao (born 1988), all residing in Buon Ma Thuot City.

These subjects were prosecuted and arrested for using "candy water" to produce bean sprouts.

Chemical 6 – Benzylaminopurine is not on the list of chemicals permitted for use in food production and the list of pesticides permitted for use in Vietnam. This is a cell growth stimulant (cytokinin), if introduced into the body it will have adverse effects on human health.

Bach Hoa Xanh said it has recalled bean sprouts soaked in toxic substances that 'cause birth defects' . Bach Hoa Xanh Trading Joint Stock Company has recalled all bean sprout products imported from a facility in Dak Lak that are said to be produced with toxic substances.
