According to PhoneArena , the late CEO Steve Jobs once said that touchscreen MacBooks "don't work and are very bad ergonomically." More than a decade later, Apple is still one of the few laptop manufacturers that doesn't offer this product. However, many recent reports say that Apple may change its mind and release a new MacBook model with a touchscreen in late 2026 or early 2027.

Apple is about to break Steve Jobs' 'oath' just for profit?

This isn’t the first time Apple has gone against Steve Jobs’s grain, though. He once said no one wanted a big-screen smartphone, but the 6.9-inch iPhone 17 Pro Max is now the company’s best-selling product. The Steve Jobs era is over, and Apple seems to be driven by one thing: profit. If it makes financial sense to make a MacBook with a touchscreen, Apple will do it.
Apple no longer listens to Steve Jobs
While the idea of touchscreen laptops is still controversial, the reality is that using touchscreens on laptops is often not a good experience. Tests on Windows laptops with touchscreens show that touching the screen is often inconvenient.
Back in the 2010s, when Windows laptops often had poor trackpads, touchscreens were considered a stopgap. But things have changed. Apple still offers excellent trackpads, and many competitors have significantly improved their trackpads. As a result, touchscreens on laptops are rarely used.

The only exception is laptops like the Lenovo Yoga, which offer the ability to switch between laptop and tablet modes. In these cases, the touchscreen really comes into its own, just like it does on devices like the iPad or Galaxy Tab. But it's a different kind of device, and that's why products like the Surface Pro and iPad Pro have become so popular.
The battle between Steve Jobs' legacy and Apple's current profits continues, and the future of MacBooks with touchscreens will be something to watch.
