The good news came early in the women's jujitsu duo show. Despite facing pressure from the host country, which is very strong in martial arts, Hong Ngoc and Ngoc Bich still won the bronze medal, officially "opening" the medal table for the country at the 33rd SEA Games.
"I'm afraid of ghosts, so... I'm playing the role of a ghost."
What made Hong Ngoc and Ngoc Bich score strongly with the judges and audience was not only their skillful technique but also their incredibly unique performance script. Instead of choosing safe, familiar themes like school or textbooks that other teams often use, the Vietnamese pair decided to bring a "horror" flavor to the stage.

Sharing her thoughts immediately after receiving the award, Hong Ngoc humorously revealed the origin of the idea: "Actually, it's quite ironic that both Ngoc Bich and I are very afraid of ghosts. But people say that if you're afraid of something, you have to face it. Because we're afraid, we know what that feeling is like, and we decided to use fear as the foundation for our performance."
It was this "daring" and difference that created a dramatic duo show performance, breaking away from the usual stereotypes of this content at conventions.
Character on away games
Entering the competition with a much more hectic schedule compared to the host team Thailand, the Vietnamese pair affirmed that physical fitness was not a barrier. "Thanks to the high-intensity training sessions with coach Nguyen Minh Phuong at home, we entered the competition with a very relaxed mindset, not feeling out of breath at all despite the short rest times between the events," Ngoc Bich shared.

Regarding their Thai opponents and the refereeing, the two female fighters said they were completely satisfied. "The judges scored very fairly and impartially. As for the Thai opponents, although they are very strong, we have clashed with them many times so we are no longer intimidated. Having represented Vietnam, we will give it our all in the ring," Hong Ngoc affirmed.
Although they only stopped at the bronze medal, Hong Ngoc and Ngoc Bich's achievements had great spiritual significance for the two young girls.
Ngoc Bich was moved: "I am still very nervous but extremely proud to be the first person to bring home an achievement for the team. This is only the first day, we have 3 more days of competition with 4 more events. This medal will be the motivation for both of us to try to change the color of the medal in the coming days."
