According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 scheduled to fly from Denver, Colorado to Houston, Texas, had to return to Denver International Airport after an engine cover detached and struck the wing.
In the air traffic control recording, a pilot stated that "some passengers and flight attendants heard a loud banging sound on the wing of the aircraft." According to CNN, Southwest Airlines said passengers were transferred to another plane bound for Houston, which was delayed by about three hours.

Southwest Airlines also said maintenance crews would investigate the incident. The aircraft was cleared to fly by the FAA in May 2015. Boeing declined to comment in detail on the matter.
This is the latest in a series of mechanical failures involving Boeing aircraft operated by numerous airlines over the past several months. The company has faced years of intense scrutiny regarding aircraft safety.
