On July 18th, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases reported the admission and treatment of a 52-year-old male patient from Thanh Hoa province who was hospitalized in critical condition due to Streptococcus suis infection, pneumonia, and cirrhosis.
According to the investigation, about 10 days before being hospitalized, the male patient bought pig's head to prepare and treat his friends. One day after preparing the pig's head, the patient developed a high fever and hemorrhagic rashes on his skin. He was then taken to a nearby medical facility and transferred to Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital in a state of high fever, altered consciousness, and hypotension. He was intubated, placed on a ventilator, and required hemodialysis.
Despite intensive care for a week, the patient's condition did not improve, progressing to multiple organ failure and severe coagulation disorders. Blood cultures revealed Streptococcus suis (pig streptococcus bacteria).
The patient was then transferred to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in critical condition. Dr. Phan Van Manh, from the Emergency Department of the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, said that examinations revealed the patient had contracted Streptococcus suis infection during food processing.
"Common Streptococcus suis infection causes two main conditions: septicemia and meningitis. In this male patient, cerebrospinal fluid analysis ruled out meningitis. However, the septicemia progressed very rapidly, causing many serious consequences such as blood clotting disorders and prolonged multi-organ failure, making treatment difficult and time-consuming," said Dr. Phan Van Manh, warning that any healthy person can become infected with Streptococcus suis through contact with the pathogen.
