The population increased by nearly 1 million people.

The General Statistics Office (GSO) has just released a report on the socio -economic situation in 2023. According to statistics, the average population of Vietnam in 2023 is 100.3 million people, an increase of 834,800 people compared to 2022. Currently, Vietnam is the third most populous country in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia and the Philippines) and ranks 15th in the world. Of this, 50 million are male, accounting for 49.9%; and 50.3 million are female, accounting for 50.1%. The sex ratio of the population is 99.5 males/100 females. According to the GSO, the birth rate is showing a slight downward trend, and the population growth rate has been gradually decreasing in recent years. The birth rate is projected to continue to decline in the following years (average population growth rate in 2022 was 0.98%, and in 2023 it is 0.84%). Vietnam's population structure is shifting towards an increasing proportion of the elderly and a decreasing proportion of the young population. Vietnam is currently in a period of demographic dividend while simultaneously undergoing population aging. Specifically, the proportion of the young population aged 0-14 decreased from 24.3% in 2019 to approximately 23.9% in 2023; while the population aged 60 and over increased rapidly, from 11.9% in 2019 to 13.9% in 2023. The population aged 15-59, which accounted for 63.8% in 2019, decreased to 62.2% in 2023. Furthermore, the total fertility rate in 2023 is estimated at 1.96 children per woman. Vietnam's fertility rate is lower than the average for Southeast Asian countries (2.0 children per woman). In particular, the gender imbalance remains high. The sex ratio at birth in 2023 was 112 boys per 100 girls.

The average life expectancy for Vietnamese people is 73.7 years.

According to the General Statistics Office, the quality of the population has improved, the birth rate has decreased sharply and has basically maintained the replacement level since 2005. The mortality rate remains low, and average life expectancy has increased due to advancements in medicine and improved healthcare. The average life expectancy of the entire population in 2023 was 73.7 years (73.6 years in 2022), with men at 71.1 years and women at 76.5 years. Vietnamese people have a relatively high life expectancy compared to countries with similar living standards; however, they also experience a higher number of years living with illness. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), among the 10 Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam ranks 5th in life expectancy for men and 2nd for women. However, the number of years lived with illness is high compared to other countries. Speaking to the press earlier, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Trung Anh, Director of the Central Geriatric Hospital, said that elderly Vietnamese people suffer from many diseases. On average, each elderly person endures 14 years of their life with multiple illnesses. "Specifically, on average, a person over 60 years old suffers from 3-4 diseases, and especially those over 80 years old may have more than 6 diseases. This is a huge burden for patients and their families, especially in terms of care. Besides medical support policies for the elderly, people need to strengthen disease prevention measures. This includes health screening, early detection of diseases, and good management of non-communicable diseases…," Dr. Trung Anh shared.
