Vietnam ranked second with a turnover of 3.4 billion USD. Vietnam's market share in the Chinese market nearly doubled from 8% in 2022 to 14% in 2023.

Vietnam has emerged as a phenomenon and surpassed Chile - the country that has ranked second in fruit and vegetable exports to China for many years.

Vietnam's fruit exports to this market increased sharply in 2023, specifically, jackfruit exports increased by 44.6%, mangoes increased by 44.2%, chili increased by 34.5%...

In 2023, China will sharply increase its durian imports from Vietnam, reaching 493 thousand tons, worth 2.1 billion USD, up 1,107.0% in volume and 1,035.8% in value compared to 2022. The market share of Vietnamese durian in China's total imports will increase sharply to 34.6%. Fresh durian from Vietnam has been licensed for official export to the Chinese market since July 2022.

According to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, due to the sudden increase in durian export turnover, Vietnam surpassed Chile to become the second largest fruit and vegetable supplier to China. Along with that, China also increased its import of processed fruits and vegetables from Vietnam last year, so the export turnover of this industry skyrocketed, setting a historical record.

According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, fruit and vegetable exports to China increased sharply in January 2024, reaching 306 million USD, up 20.1% compared to December 2023 and up 103.9% compared to January 2023.

Export activities of the fruit and vegetable industry have many positive signs, because the export value of fruit and vegetable products to the Chinese market accounts for 62.4% of the total export value of fruit and vegetable products in January 2024.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha - Head of the Plant Protection Sub-Department of Region VII (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that currently, the most exported fruits and vegetables from Vietnam to China through the land border gates in Lang Son province are dragon fruit, jackfruit, mango and durian. The amount of fruits and vegetables exported to China increased by 30% compared to the same period last year.

The demand for fruits and vegetables in the Chinese market is high. Vietnam is still negotiating with China to have more products officially exported to this market. In the immediate future, it will be frozen durian, avocado, passion fruit, etc.

Recently, China announced that it will open its market for many potential agricultural products from Vietnam, including: fresh coconuts, frozen fruit products, citrus fruits, avocados, custard apples, rose apples, etc., officially exported to this country.

“The Plant Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ) has completed the procedures and documents to request China to grant a license to import frozen durian from Vietnam. If Vietnamese frozen durian is granted a license, the export prospects for this item will continue to be positive,” said Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen.
