Electricity consumption in the northern region will peak as it enters the 2025 summer peak season.
Electricity consumption has increased dramatically.
In the early days of June 2025, the northern region of Vietnam continuously recorded record-high electricity consumption levels. According to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), at 1:15 PM on June 2nd, electricity consumption in 27 northern provinces and cities (excluding Hanoi ) peaked at 17,400 MW, the highest electricity consumption level ever recorded.
However, just a few hours later, at 9:50 PM, electricity consumption in the northern region once again set a record of 17,900 MW - exceeding the peak set earlier that day by another 500 MW. This consumption level is 3.47% higher than the peak in 2024 (17,300 MW, recorded on August 10, 2024).
In Thanh Hoa , commercial electricity production in June reached 866.179 million kWh, a growth of 15.1%. At 10:30 PM on June 2nd, Thanh Hoa also recorded a record high electricity consumption of 1,597.5 MW.
The surge in electricity demand is due to the prolonged period of intense heat throughout the day, coupled with a sharp increase in the use of cooling devices in the evening – the peak time for household activities.
Why are electricity bills so high?
Prolonged hot weather and high temperatures have led people to use air conditioners and other cooling devices more frequently and for longer periods throughout the day. Especially during peak hours, many families use multiple high-power electrical appliances simultaneously, such as induction cookers, washing machines, and water heaters, putting significant strain on the power grid. Consequently, household electricity consumption has increased significantly.
According to a decision by the Ministry of Industry and Trade , electricity prices in Vietnam have been adjusted upwards by 4.8% effective May 10, 2025. This price increase is implemented under the mechanism for adjusting the average retail electricity price when input costs increase by 2% or more, as stipulated in Government Decree 72/2025/ND-CP.
The sharp increase in electricity consumption and the rise in the average retail electricity price from May 10, 2025, are the main reasons for the significant increase in electricity bills this past June.
Thanh Hoa Power Company advises customers to use electricity economically and efficiently.
Given the prolonged hot weather during the peak months in Northern Vietnam, and in support of electricity consumers, Thanh Hoa Power Company recommends that people use electricity economically and efficiently to limit high bills and reduce pressure on the power grid.
Specifically, people should turn off unnecessary electrical devices, avoid using high-power devices during peak hours (from 10 am to 2 pm and 7 pm to 11 pm), and avoid using multiple devices simultaneously to prevent overloading.
People should prioritize energy-efficient appliances with high-efficiency energy labels, switch to LED light bulbs, use inverter air conditioners, and set the air conditioner temperature between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius...
Proactively controlling electricity consumption, minimizing escalating bills, and reducing living costs are not only solutions for customers but also contribute to Thanh Hoa Power Company's efforts to ensure national energy security and achieve sustainable development.
