In an interview with the Associated Press, Secretary-General Stoltenberg confirmed that he had urged Turkey to complete the process during his meeting with President Erdogan on December 1st, on the sidelines of the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Mr. Stoltenberg shared: “I met with President Erdogan this morning and I reiterated my message that it is time to complete Sweden’s NATO accession process… I cannot give an exact timeframe, but I welcome President Erdogan’s submission of the relevant documents to the Turkish Parliament a few weeks ago.”
Türkiye and Hungary are the two remaining NATO member states that have not yet officially approved Sweden's membership application.
Ankara has delayed the approval process for Stockholm's NATO membership application for over a year, while accusing Sweden of disregarding Türkiye's security concerns, including its fight against Kurdish militants.
