Elderly people join hands to build the capital

Promoting the role of "tall trees with great shade", the elderly are always shining examples, spreading the spirit of patriotic emulation, contributing to building a more civilized and modern capital.

Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Nguyen The Toan said: Currently, the city has 526 grassroots associations, 4,887 branches, 13,580 association groups and 1,090,504 members.

For many years, the City Elderly Association at all levels has organized many practical activities to care for the material and spiritual life of its members. The Association has coordinated with all levels, sectors and units to mobilize and create resources to care for, visit and give gifts to 236,475 elderly people in difficult circumstances, with a total amount of more than 79 billion VND; supported the construction of 10 charity houses for elderly people in difficult housing circumstances, with a total amount of 600 million VND.

The Association also coordinated with units to organize medical examinations, consultations, and free medicine for 461,206 elderly people, with a total value of more than 15.7 billion VND; organized many cultural, artistic, and sports activities attracting a large number of officials and members to participate.

In addition, together with all classes of people, cadres and members of the elderly association are always active and enthusiastic in production and participate in patriotic emulation movements, implementing the Party's policies and the State's laws. In particular, the movement "Old age - bright example" has seen the emergence of many outstanding collectives and individuals in various fields, who have been commended by all levels and sectors.

Joining the Elderly Association of Tran Hung Dao Ward (Hoan Kiem District) at the age of over 70, Mr. Dang Dinh Cat, as Chairman of the Elderly Association, Deputy Secretary of the Party Cell, Head of the Residential Area Front Committee, is a typical example in helping and caring for the elderly.

Mr. Cat shared: “As a grassroots cadre, taking on many tasks, I always learn about policies and regimes related to the elderly, to have timely recommendations for members, such as the protection regime for people aged 80 and over who do not have a monthly income, and propose hardship allowances for the elderly during holidays and Tet.”

Although she is nearly 80 years old, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, Chairwoman of the Elderly Association of Kim Bai town (Thanh Oai district) still actively encourages cadres and members to promote the role of exemplary elderly people, acting as the core to participate in the Campaign "All people unite to build cultural families - model families".

She has promoted and mobilized people to practice civilized weddings and funerals. “On average, in the past 4 years, the number of people who died in the town who were cremated reached nearly 90%. Therefore, from 2021 to 2025, Kim Lam, Kim Bai, and Cat Dong villages will continuously maintain the title of cultural villages and advanced model residential groups,” Ms. Thanh shared.

Learn and follow Uncle Ho's example through concrete actions.

Not only upholding the spirit of "Old age - bright example", each cadre and elderly member has strived to learn and follow Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style through specific actions, such as participating in production development, helping each other to sustainably reduce poverty; maintaining and ensuring security and order at the grassroots level; building new rural areas and civilized urban areas; building cultural life in residential areas...

A typical example is Vice President of the Elderly Association of Phu Kim Commune (Thach That District) Do Thi Phuong. Ms. Phuong always tries to follow Uncle Ho's teachings and is an exemplary person in completing assigned tasks. As the head of Noi Thon village, she has taken the initiative to build a foundation to do a good job of caring for the elderly in the locality.

"Thanks to the profits, every year the association does a good job of visiting sick members and giving gifts to members who are one year old," Ms. Phuong shared.

Or like the Chairman of the Elderly Association of Trung Hoa Commune (Chuong My District) Le Hung Thi, is always energetic and responsible for his work. He and the Executive Committee of the Elderly Association of the Commune have encouraged the elderly to participate in building the family economy and building farms, and to become business owners. Up to now, the commune has 6 delegates who are elderly people with good economic performance to attend the district's commendation conference and 1 delegate to attend the city-level conference.

The above are just some typical examples of the elderly in the capital. Their actions not only set a good example for many people, their children and their families to follow, but also demonstrate their core role, promote the tradition of "Old age - good example", and make important contributions to the community, society and the socio-economic development of the capital.

Chairman of the Hanoi Elderly Association Nguyen The Toan said: In the coming time, the Association at all levels will continue to promote the patriotic emulation movement "Old age - bright example" with many diverse and rich forms; create conditions and encourage the elderly to promote their intelligence, experience, prestige, and make more practical and effective contributions to the cause of building and protecting the capital and the country.

In particular, cadres, members, and the elderly at all levels set an example in implementing digital transformation, green transformation, environmental protection, actively developing the economy, creating jobs for many local workers...

In addition, the association at all levels continues to innovate the content and methods of operation towards the grassroots; promote the movement "Old age - bright example" of the elderly in the capital to a new level, contributing worthily to the new era of development, the era of rising up of the Vietnamese nation.
