Elderly people who are outstanding role models
According to Nguyen The Toan, Chairman of the Hanoi City Association of Elderly People: Currently, the city has 526 grassroots associations, 4,887 branches, 13,580 sub-branches, and 1,090,504 members.
For many years, the City's Senior Citizens Association at all levels has organized many practical activities to care for the material and spiritual lives of its members. The Association has coordinated with various levels, sectors, and units to mobilize resources to care for, visit, and give gifts to 236,475 elderly people in difficult circumstances, totaling over 79 billion VND; and supported the construction of 10 charitable houses for elderly people facing housing difficulties, with a total amount of 600 million VND.
The association also coordinated with other units to organize free medical examinations, consultations, and medication distribution for 461,206 elderly people, with a total value of over 15.7 billion VND; and organized many cultural, artistic, and sports activities that attracted a large number of officials and members to participate.
Furthermore, along with other segments of the population, elderly officials and members have always been active and enthusiastic in labor and production, participating in patriotic emulation movements and implementing the Party's policies and the State's laws. In particular, the "Elderly - Shining Examples" movement has produced many outstanding collectives and individuals in various fields, who have been commended by various levels and sectors.
Joining the Elderly Association of Tran Hung Dao Ward (Hoan Kiem District) at over 70 years old, Mr. Dang Dinh Cat, in his roles as Chairman of the Elderly Association, Deputy Secretary of the Party branch, and Head of the residential area's Fatherland Front Committee, is a prime example of helping and caring for the elderly.
Mr. Cat shared: "As a grassroots official with many responsibilities, I always research regulations and policies related to the elderly, so that I can promptly offer suggestions to members, such as support schemes for people aged 80 and above who have no monthly income, and proposals for hardship allowances for the elderly during holidays and festivals."
Despite being nearly 80 years old, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, Chairwoman of the Elderly Association of Kim Bai town (Thanh Oai district), still actively encourages officials and members to uphold the role of exemplary elderly people, serving as a core participant in the "National Solidarity Movement to Build Culturally Advanced and Model Families".
She has promoted and encouraged the people to practice civilized weddings and funerals. “On average over the past four years, nearly 90% of deceased people in the town have opted for cremation. Therefore, from 2021 to 2025, Kim Lam, Kim Bai, and Cat Dong villages will continuously maintain their titles as cultural villages and advanced model residential areas,” Ms. Thanh shared.
Learn from and follow President Ho Chi Minh's example through concrete actions.
Not only upholding the spirit of "Elderly people - shining examples," each elderly official and member has strived to learn and follow Ho Chi Minh's ideology, ethics, and style through concrete actions, such as participating in production development, helping each other reduce poverty sustainably; maintaining and ensuring security and order at the grassroots level; building new rural areas and civilized urban areas; building cultural life in residential areas...
A prime example is Ms. Do Thi Phuong, Vice President of the Elderly Association of Phu Kim commune (Thach That district). Ms. Phuong always strives to follow President Ho Chi Minh's teachings and exemplifies the excellent performance of her assigned tasks. As the head of the Noi Thon village branch, she initiated the creation of a fund to effectively care for the elderly in the locality.
"Thanks to the interest earned each year, the branch association does a good job of visiting sick members and giving gifts to members celebrating milestone birthdays," Ms. Phuong shared.
For example, Le Hung Thi, Chairman of the Elderly Association of Trung Hoa commune (Chuong My district), is always energetic and responsible in his work. He, along with the Executive Committee of the Elderly Association, has encouraged elderly people to participate in building family businesses, establishing farms, and becoming business owners. To date, the commune has six elderly representatives who are successful entrepreneurs, who have attended the district's commendation conference, and one representative who has attended the city-level conference.
The above are just a few examples of exemplary elderly people in the capital city. Their actions not only set a good example for many people and their families to follow, but also demonstrate their pivotal role in upholding the tradition of "Elderly people - shining examples," making important contributions to the community, society, and the socio-economic development of the capital city.
Chairman of the Hanoi City Association of Elderly People, Nguyen The Toan, said: In the coming time, the Association at all levels will continue to promote the patriotic emulation movement "Elderly people - shining examples" with many diverse and rich forms; creating conditions and encouraging elderly people to utilize their wisdom, experience, and prestige to make more practical and effective contributions to the cause of building and protecting the Capital and the country.
In particular, officials, members, and elderly people at all levels have set a good example in implementing digital transformation, green transformation, environmental protection, actively developing the economy, and creating jobs for many local workers...
In addition, the associations at all levels continue to innovate the content and methods of their activities, focusing on the grassroots; promoting the "Elderly - Shining Examples" movement of the elderly in Hanoi to a new level, making a worthy contribution to the new era of development and the rise of the Vietnamese nation.
