According to statistics from Song Lo commune, the area is at risk of serious landslides directly affecting nearly 60 households. Many households were forced to move their assets and crops away from the shore to prevent damage.
Ms. Bui Thi Xuan in Khoai Thuong village said that for the past two years, the alluvial land stretching dozens of meters from her garden to the river, where she mainly grew bananas and corn, has been washed away by the river water. Now the riverbank is only about 30 meters from her house. If the embankment is not built soon, the risk of landslides will reach the garden land and threaten all the properties and houses of the people living along the river.
“We, the people of Khoai Thuong and Khoai Trung villages, hope that the authorities will intervene and soon invest in the embankment so that we can feel secure in production and have a stable life in the long term,” Ms. Xuan shared.
Not only losing productive land, landslides also make it difficult for people to make a living. The riverbanks, which used to be the main source of income for households, were washed away by the water, leaving dangerous, steep banks.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duy Tien, Vice Chairman of Song Lo Commune People's Committee, the river used to flow smoothly, water was evenly distributed on both banks. But in recent years, the riverbed has been deeply eroded, the pressure of the flow has been greatly different, causing the flow to hit the riverbanks directly, causing serious erosion. In some places, after just one night, dozens of meters of land were eroded into the alluvial land of people who were cultivating and producing. In particular, after the circulation of storm No. 10, the landslide continued to spread more than 500 meters, directly threatening dozens of households.
The Vice Chairman of Song Lo Commune added that, previously, due to the serious landslide situation, on June 15, 2023, the People's Committee of the former Vinh Phuc province decided to approve the technical and economic report on investment in the construction of the project: Anti-erosion embankment on the left bank of Lo River, corresponding to Km21+950 - Km22+460 in Khoai Thuong village, former Duc Bac commune (now Song Lo commune), Phu Tho province. However, due to some objective factors, the project has not yet been implemented.
After the circulation of storm No. 5, the area of Khoai Thuong village continued to erode and spread by more than 500m, bringing the total area of erosion to more than 1,000m. On August 6, after inspection and review, the People's Committee of Phu Tho province approved the project to handle erosion of the Lo river bank through Song Lo commune and the right bank of Pho Day river through Tien Lu commune; in which, the section through Song Lo commune corresponds to the section from Km23+875 to Km24+880 of the left dike of Lo river with a total investment of nearly 20 billion VND.

According to the decision, the embankment is more than 1km long, with a 6m top elevation, reinforced with loose boulders, and locked at the beginning and end with large rocks to stabilize the flow and prevent erosion. However, the project has not yet been implemented while landslides continue to spread, threatening houses, production land and dike safety.
Faced with the complicated developments caused by landslides, on October 21, the People's Committee of Song Lo commune sent a document to the People's Committee of Phu Tho province and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of the province requesting urgent handling of riverbank landslides in Khoai Thuong village.
The document stated that recently, due to prolonged heavy rains, the water level of the Lo River has risen. After the water receded, it caused serious landslides, creating a deep abyss and there is a risk of further bank erosion and river breakage with a length of more than 500m and a height of 5 to 10m. The landslide is located right next to a residential area, threatening the property and lives of many households living along this area.
Song Lo Commune People's Committee requested Phu Tho Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment to inspect and survey the scene and approve an emergency plan to handle the landslide incident in Khoai Thuong area to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, while ensuring the structure of the dike system in the commune.
