Garbage collected at the old Dak Mil district landfill, now in Thuan An commune, Lam Dong province.

The above landfill was licensed to operate since 2011 with an area of about 3 hectares, by a joint venture of Water Supply and Environmental Services Company Limited (headquartered in Binh Phuoc ward, Dong Nai province) and Nghia Ha Construction Company Limited (headquartered in Bac Gia Nghia ward, Lam Dong province) to collect, assemble and treat waste.

According to the reflection of many people in Thuan An commune, the garbage collection and gathering unit at the landfill of Dak Mil district, Dak Nong province (old), now under the administrative boundary of Dak Thuy village, Thuan An commune, Lam Dong province, has dumped hundreds of tons of garbage along National Highway 14C with a length of more than 200m. This "garbage mountain" is located in the traffic safety corridor and overflows onto the road surface. This situation leads to a strong stench and can easily cause traffic accidents for people and vehicles moving through this area.

Mr. Le Van Hung, a resident of Thuan An commune, said that his family has a farm in Dak Thuy village, so they often pass by the landfill area. During the dry season of 2024 - 2025, this landfill burned for many months, with thick smoke and a foul, burning smell spreading for many kilometers. For more than a month now, a mountain of garbage has been gathered and spilled onto the National Highway, posing a great danger to road users.

Mr. Tran The Hien, a long-distance truck driver, said that he often travels on National Highway 14C and passes by the landfill. The environmental pollution here is very alarming. Garbage is collected along the National Highway, causing a strong stench. Every time he drives through this area, he has to pay attention to motorbikes, because most people drive very fast to avoid the smell from the landfill, which can easily lead to accidents.

According to the People's Committee of Thuan An Commune, the landfill in Dak Thuy Village is a common landfill of Dak Mil District, Dak Nong Province (old). The collection and treatment of waste here is very rudimentary and has been causing serious environmental pollution for many years. Waste is collected from the center of the old Dak Mil District, now Duc Lap Commune and neighboring communes and left to decompose naturally.

On October 7, the People's Committee of Thuan An commune directed the Economic Department and related units to conduct a survey and measure the volume of waste that needs to be treated and buried according to regulations. The survey results showed that the actual volume of waste is large, while the landfill is currently overloaded. The waste collection and transportation units dumped waste outside National Highway 14C, causing traffic insecurity and affecting environmental sanitation in the area.

Mr. Phan Ba Tinh - Chairman of Thuan An Commune People's Committee said that the commune has requested the garbage collection unit not to dump garbage in the traffic safety corridor and on National Highway 14C to limit environmental pollution and the risk of traffic accidents. In the long term, the commune recommends that Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee and relevant functional agencies soon allocate funds to upgrade and build a garbage treatment plant to thoroughly handle the environmental pollution here.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lam Dong, the Dak Mil district landfill (old) is one of the 9 facilities causing serious environmental pollution in Lam Dong province. In the immediate future, the Department has requested localities to take temporary measures such as: using chemicals, spraying biological waste, collecting waste... to limit environmental pollution and limit negative impacts on people's health. In the long term, Lam Dong province is also continuing to call for investment in waste treatment projects in accordance with approved planning.
