The Ring Road 1 expansion project, specifically the Hoang Cau - Voi Phuc section, spans over 2.2 km with a 50m wide cross-section and is one of Hanoi 's key projects aimed at reducing inner-city traffic congestion. The route begins at the intersection with Cat Linh - La Thanh - Yen Lang roads at Hoang Cau and ends at the Voi Phuc intersection. With a total investment exceeding 7,800 billion VND, this project has been dubbed the "most expensive road on the planet."

The project was approved in December 2017 and was expected to be completed in 2020, but progress has been delayed due to land clearance issues. At recent meetings, Hanoi Party Secretary Nguyen Duy Ngoc and Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan requested relevant units to focus on implementing comprehensive measures and complete land clearance before December 15th.

According to observations by VTC News reporters from December 10-12, land clearance work is being carried out urgently along De La Thanh road. The entire road is barricaded to ensure safety, allowing only households subject to land acquisition to move their belongings.

Dozens of workers, along with concrete drills, cutters, and excavators, worked continuously, demolishing rows of houses along the street.

Electricity workers were also present to retrieve wires and meters and dismantle the electrical system, ensuring safety before machinery continued the demolition.

After the houses were demolished, chunks of concrete, broken bricks, and iron bars were exposed, lying haphazardly along De La Thanh street.

Environmental workers and construction crews are continuously collecting and transporting debris to clear a path for heavy machinery to access the site.

Some households are busy moving their belongings to the resettlement area. According to a resident who has lived on De La Thanh Street for over 40 years, this house has been his home for half his life, and leaving is inevitably a bittersweet experience. But he understands that the street has been overloaded for many years, and any change must make way for the project. "My family has received compensation and is preparing to move permanently. We just hope the project will be completed soon so that the roads will be clearer and travel will be less difficult," he said.

After days of persuasion, the residents agreed to hand over the land to the authorities, demonstrating their willingness to share for the common good. "We have lived our whole lives on this street, but we see the road expansion as necessary. Everyone is unpacking their belongings and preparing to move, feeling both regretful and confident in the development of the capital," shared Ms. LTT (56 years old, residing on De La Thanh Street).

At the same time, many people also came to buy scrap iron, steel, and other salvageable materials from the recently demolished area.

The demolition and handover of the land on De La Thanh Street is an important step in the process of completing the Ring Road 1 project.

Under the close guidance of the Hanoi City Party Committee and the decisive involvement of the entire political system, the land clearance work for the project has been basically completed. The total area recovered reached 153,341 m², affecting 1,983 households and organizations. Of these, O Cho Dua Ward and Giang Vo Ward have completed the clearance for all 591/591 and 795/795 households respectively. Lang Ward has completed the clearance for 596/597 households, with one organization still finalizing the land handover procedures.

In just over 5 months since the implementation of the two-tiered local government model (from July 1, 2025), the wards of O Cho Dua, Giang Vo, and Lang have completed compensation, resettlement support, and land acquisition for 1,295 households.

In the coming days, construction units will continue to accelerate land clearance work, while coordinating with relevant authorities to ensure safety, sanitation, and urban order, in order to complete the project on schedule.
