After major US media outlets successively declared Republican candidate Donald Trump the winner of the November 5th presidential election, Timmy P., 32, a Vietnamese-American citizen, said he was delighted that his supporter had won. Timmy P. has lived and worked in the US for nearly 10 years, currently residing in Minnesota and working in the beauty industry. He shared that economic issues were the main reason he decided to vote for Trump. He stated that in recent years, the economy has declined, and inflation has tightened people's finances . As a working -class person with an average income, he hoped that Trump's economic policies would help the economy recover, especially since he comes from a business background. Furthermore, he believes that the lax immigration policies under President Joe Biden have allowed a massive influx of foreigners, affecting the jobs of American citizens like himself. He believes that Trump's stricter immigration policies will protect the interests of American citizens first. He shared that his colleagues, who are from the working class, all support Trump. He hopes that Trump's upcoming term will help the American economy recover and grow again. Regarding his reason for not voting for Kamala Harris, he said he was concerned that her immigration policies would likely remain the same as during Biden's presidency. Furthermore, he believes Harris's welfare policies for low-income and poor people may not create additional job opportunities to boost economic growth. From California, Dung Hoang said she was happy with the final election results, with former President Trump winning. She and her husband had previously voted in his favor. Speaking about her expectations for his four-year term starting next year, Dung said she only hopes "he will help the American economy improve and reduce the tax burden." However, Ms. Dung added that all policy decisions are not solely the responsibility of the president, but also of the entire state apparatus behind him. "First, thanks to his election as president, the stock market has reached its peak. Hopefully, it will continue that momentum," Ms. Dung said. She also hopes that the new US president will effectively control the problem of illegal immigration. In Torrance, California, Ms. Vu Thi Hai Ha shared that she was happy that Republican candidate Donald Trump won the election. Because she recently took her citizenship test, she is not yet eligible to vote in the 2024 election, but her husband voted in person. Ms. Ha said that California is a Democratic stronghold, so the campaign activities of the two candidates were not as intense as in some other battleground states. However, based on her personal observation, this year she saw many people in her neighborhood openly supporting Trump by displaying his flag and banners on their cars. Ms. Ha said she has always supported Mr. Trump. According to her, Mr. Trump is a decisive politician who can keep his promises, says what he means and does what he says, and gives her the feeling that he prioritizes protecting the interests of the people, rather than large corporations. In the coming years, Ms. Ha plans to settle permanently in the US, so she hopes that during the new term, the Trump administration will help the American economy flourish even more, as this is a topic that she and her family are very interested in.
