Kumquat growers are busy during Tet season

There are still more than 2 months left until the Lunar New Year of Binh Ngo 2026, but in the kumquat growing areas in the North of Dong Nai province, including Loc Quang commune, the working atmosphere has become busy. People take care of each kumquat tree every day, prune the leaves, bend the branches and adjust the shape so that the tree has a beautiful shape and yellow fruits to serve the Lunar New Year market in 2026.

Good harvest, good price

From early morning, the kumquat garden of Mr. Le Thanh Tu's family (residing in Thang Loi hamlet, Loc Quang commune) was bustling with the sound of pruning shears, bending branches and the lively chatter of workers. Among the lush green kumquat beds, each cluster of fruit was carefully tended by Mr. Tu, expecting a bumper Tet crop. This year, Mr. Tu's family plans to sell more than 300 trees. A good harvest, good prices and favorable weather have given him the motivation to boldly consider expanding the area in the coming seasons.

Mr. Tu said: This year, the weather is quite stable, abundant rainfall helps significantly reduce irrigation, electricity and water costs. Thanks to that, the kumquat trees grow better and more evenly. He plans to expand the scale to about 400-500 trees next year if conditions are favorable. According to Mr. Tu, growing kumquat trees brings in high income, so as long as he has the strength, he will try to do it to improve the economic efficiency for his family.

According to Mr. Tu, kumquat growing requires year-round care, but the busiest time starts from the end of September and the beginning of October of the lunar calendar. “Kumquat growers must carefully calculate from the stage of preparing the soil, choosing varieties, and fertilizing; monitor the growth process to shape, shape, and create round fruits and thick green leaves. Each stage requires meticulousness, patience, and experience,” Mr. Tu added.

Mr. Pham Quoc Thang, Head of the Kumquat Growing Team of Loc Quang Commune, said: “To have a beautiful kumquat tree, first of all, you must choose a good seedling, prioritizing varieties with large leaves and large fruits. The care process lasts about 3 years to produce a standard tree, with a height of 2-2.5m. During this time, every year the grower must root, dig and move the tree to another location to stimulate the root system to grow healthily, producing many new roots”. The wholesale price of kumquat trees in the garden currently ranges from 800 thousand to 1 million VND/tree”.

Concerned that natural disasters could affect supply, many traders have come to kumquat gardens right now to choose beautiful trees and reserve their goods early. According to kumquat growers, many gardens have already received deposits of 30-40%, and the buying and selling atmosphere has become much more vibrant than in previous years.

Loc Quang Commune currently has 13 members participating in the Kumquat Ornamental Planting Association, each household grows 4-5 thousand trees including: seedling trees, young trees and commercial trees. This year, the cooperative group plans to supply more than 6,500 kumquat trees to the market, meeting the demand for the Lunar New Year of Binh Ngo 2026.

Building the Loc Quang kumquat brand

In addition to product consumption, the Kumquat Cultivation Group also focuses on building and promoting the local brand. Many beautiful kumquat trees are displayed at the commune's product showroom, creating a space for people to visit, take photos and contribute to spreading the image of Loc Quang kumquat.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ha, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Loc Quang Commune, said: Since the beginning of the year, the association has allocated 350 million VND to support members of the craft group with preferential loans, helping people invest in seeds, materials and take care of their gardens with the right techniques. Capital support work associated with product promotion and display activities has been implemented synchronously, contributing to improving economic efficiency and building the local kumquat brand to develop more and more.

The kumquat growing profession in Loc Quang commune not only contributes to preserving the cultural beauty and hobby of growing ornamental plants during Tet but also becomes a significant source of income for farmers here.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dai (residing in Tan Tien commune, Dong Nai province) said that he visited the garden and noticed that the kumquats had beautiful fruits and high productivity, so he was looking for prices to import them for sale during the Lunar New Year. According to Mr. Dai, Loc Quang kumquats have the advantage of stable quality, reasonable price and are easy to sell in the market.

Despite many challenges, thanks to the diligence and flexibility of growers and timely support from local authorities, in recent years, kumquat trees in Loc Quang have increasingly affirmed their brand in the market. The kumquat trees not only contribute to the warm spring atmosphere but also help farmers increase their income, creating motivation to expand production in the following seasons.
