In a statement issued after the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) ministerial meeting in Vientiane, Laos, on October 8, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi affirmed that human rights is a significant regional challenge facing ASEAN.
According to the head of Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, "everywhere we see various challenges related to human rights. This highlights the vulnerability in protecting these rights."
Referring to solutions such as strengthening the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and promoting cooperation with ASEAN partner countries, Ms. Retno Marsudi stated that the right to development is an integral part of efforts to realize human rights and global peace.
In addition, the Indonesian diplomat also mentioned the challenges ASEAN faces related to developments in the South China Sea, expressing hope to prevent escalation in the maritime region.
