AI tools to help run and drive newsroom work

(CLO) The use of AI in journalism is not only happening in specialized fields, but AI tools can also help newsrooms manage projects, reduce stress and communicate better internally.

Speaking at the Mental Health in Journalism Conference earlier this month, Anita Zielina, strategic communications management consultant and managing director of Better Leaders Lab, said staff retention is the next big challenge in the media industry.

She proposed several AI solutions for newsroom leaders to improve work efficiency, as well as boost newsroom member satisfaction.

Take advantage of ChatGPT features

Train a personal ChatGPT on the ideal management language style and use the tool as a foundation for future communication.

Before sending a strategic message, send it through ChatGPT first so the tool can check if there is anything that can be improved.

Use JournalGPT to capture thoughts, tasks, memos, and plans from small to large. It organizes notes into a "stream of consciousness" with suggestions for prioritization and task management.

Using a custom ChatGPT survey of employees can help you quickly understand how stressed your employees are. "It's often difficult to say that directly to your boss," Zielina says.

Recruitment and planning

Use Perplexity to create job postings and improve job descriptions for advertised positions. This is a useful tool to see if your job posting is appealing.

Upload templates and notes to NotebookLM to create a communications strategy. Templates and notes can be customized. One journalist estimated the tool cut her planning time in half.

Reduce meeting load and speed up work

Use FirefliesAI to take minutes at editorial meetings. It summarizes and tracks tasks, creating more accountability.

Use Zapier to automate tasks that "should be automated or shouldn't be done by a human." This is where real productivity comes in.

Use NotionAI to optimize project management and task prioritization.
