In 1403, Zhu Di, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty, moved the capital from Nanjing to Beijing and started construction of the Forbidden City in July 1406. The Forbidden City covers an area of ​​about 720,000 square meters, making it one of the largest palace complexes in the world with more than 980 buildings.

After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, the Manchu Qing Dynasty began to establish its capital in Beijing from 1644. However, the Qing emperors did not like to stay inside the Forbidden City but often went to the gardens, garden structures with pavilions and towers, outside the Forbidden City.
