On September 8-9, Mr. Nguyen Van Sony, residing in Minh Tien hamlet, U Minh Thuong commune, was busy harvesting 15 acres of freshwater prawns. He said his family sold nearly 800kg, estimating a profit of 50%.

"Shrimp prices have increased sharply this year due to higher demand from the Chinese market compared to previous years. Last year at this time I was selling them for around 120,000 VND/kg, but now it's nearly 160,000 VND/kg," Sony shared.

In Vinh Binh commune, Mr. Tran Thanh Ba has just sold 450kg of freshwater prawns to traders, earning a considerable profit.

According to Mr. Ba, this year many households are hesitant to start farming due to unfavorable weather conditions, resulting in reduced yields, while increased demand has led traders to aggressively collect shrimp, driving up prices.

"At the current prices, everyone is making a profit. My family, after deducting expenses, still has a profit of about 40%. We are renovating our ponds to continue raising them. Besides giant freshwater prawns, many households are also combining them with whiteleg shrimp and tiger shrimp to increase their family income," Mr. Ba said excitedly.

Currently, top-quality freshwater prawns (15 prawns/kg) in communes such as U Minh Thuong, An Bien, and An Minh are being purchased at prices ranging from 145,000 to 160,000 VND/kg; the price for the larger size (25 prawns/kg) is also maintaining a good price. Compared to the same period last year, the price has increased by 50,000 to 60,000 VND/kg.

Thanks to shrimp farming, the lives of the local people have become increasingly stable, with many households becoming well-off and continuing to be committed to sustainable production models in this fertile land.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , the head of the An Giang Provincial Fisheries Department said that the entire province of An Giang has nearly 40,000 hectares of land used for farming giant freshwater prawns, yielding a harvest of 19,450 tons.

The selling price ranges from 140,000-150,000 VND/kg for the 10-20 pieces/kg size, an increase of about 20,000 VND/kg compared to the same period last year; the 20-30 pieces/kg size sells for 120,000-140,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 10,000-15,000 VND/kg.

"Green prawns are mainly consumed domestically, with a small amount smuggled in. It's possible that increased demand, expanded markets, and high supply have led to the price increase," said a leader of the An Giang Provincial Fisheries Department.
