Farmers in a commune of Ca Mau raise grouper and goby fish in shrimp ponds. As soon as they are caught, they sell out.

According to local residents raising grouper in Go Cong Dong hamlet, Nguyen Viet Khai commune, Phu Tan district ( Ca Mau province), people used to utilize abandoned industrial shrimp ponds to raise grouper.

However, raising grouper in earthen ponds has limitations: the fish grow slowly and are prone to disease if raised repeatedly. Therefore, farmers choose the method of raising them in shrimp ponds.

Alternatively, if raising them in large quantities in earthen ponds, when the grouper reach 300-500 grams, they should be transferred to cages or shrimp ponds, and fed a combination of small fish.

Those households without land for farming raise grouper in cages along the riverbanks, near the estuaries where there are tidal currents and alluvial deposits.

The grouper farming model has helped many households in Nguyen Viet Khai commune in particular, and households in mangrove and coastal areas in the province in general, to increase their income and stabilize their lives.

Mr. Lam Van Kia owns 2 hectares of shrimp ponds. In addition to his income from shrimp farming of approximately 40 million VND per year, Mr. Kia renovated a 200 m2 earthen pond and stocked it with 150 grouper fish.

When the grouper reach 300 grams, they are released into cages in the pond. After about 5 months of raising, they are harvested, yielding an additional income of approximately 40 million VND.

Five years ago, Mr. Ho Van Hau experimented with raising grouper in earthen ponds, achieving good results. However, after a few farming seasons, the fish became susceptible to disease and grew slowly.

Currently, he raises fish in two floating cages along the river: two large cages, each about 6 m2, with 100 fingerlings per cage, and one smaller cage for raising juvenile fish for subsequent seasons; harvesting takes place after 6-8 months of farming.

Having no land for farming, Mr. Ho Van Hau took advantage of the opportunity to raise grouper in cages along the riverbank. This, combined with his determination to improve his life, helped his family escape poverty and achieve stability.

Mr. Ho Van Hau and his wife, Ms. Tran Thi Mai Thi, have now escaped poverty, partly thanks to the income from their grouper farming model in cages.

Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen Thanh Nhan own 5.2 hectares of land for raising shrimp, crabs, blood cockles, and grouper fish, earning approximately 150 million VND per year, of which about 30 million VND comes from grouper fish.
