On September 4, a special opening ceremony took place at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. Without a large school yard or flags, nearly 150 students who are cancer patients entered the new school year together in a class named Sunflowers.
The opening ceremony not only signals the journey of learning new letters but is also a great source of motivation, adding strength to the children's determination to fight the disease. Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Diep Bao Tuan - Director of the Hospital, shared that the Sunflower class, with students who are children with different levels of illness, has been maintained for the past 16 years. This is a great source of encouragement for them to continue their treatment. "We hope that when they return healthy, they can confidently reintegrate and continue going to school, conquering the path of knowledge," said Dr. Tuan. Having accompanied the class for many years, Ms. Dinh Thi Kim Phan (69 years old) said that this year, most of the students are new faces, aged from 5 to 17 years old. She is in charge of students from grade 2 and up. Despite her old age, there were days when she got lost on 3-4 bus stops, Ms. Phan is still determined to bring letters to these students with difficult circumstances. "I often give students exercises that are easy for them to get 10 points. Seeing them happy when they receive their results is a great happiness," Ms. Phan shared. The Sunflower Class at the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital is not only a place to impart knowledge of Math and Vietnamese, but also a living testament to the spirit of studiousness and extraordinary will to live. Amidst painful chemotherapy sessions, the sounds of reading and laughter in this special classroom become invaluable spiritual medicine, sowing in the hearts of the children and their families faith in a brighter tomorrow. For them, the classroom is where their dreams are ignited. Vo Hoang Bao Long (right, 11 years old, from Can Tho ) has been treated for leukemia for 6-7 years and confided: "I just dream of being healthy and going to school like other friends." Long's dream is also the heart of many parents. Ms. Vo Thi Phuong Thuy (31 years old, from Quang Ngai ) has a daughter who was diagnosed with bone cancer last September and had to undergo surgery to amputate her left leg. "She was in the hospital more than at home, and her studies were also interrupted. Thanks to the class, she was able to consolidate her knowledge and gain more confidence in treating the disease," Ms. Thuy said emotionally. Similarly, Ms. Luu Thi Anh, whose 7-year-old daughter is battling Ependymoma, said: “We thank the medical team for not only caring for our health but also creating a useful place for learning and playing, encouraging our children every day. I hope my child and all children can overcome this terrible disease.” Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc - Deputy Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee - Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City presented gifts and scholarships to the children.
