Having just finished her high school graduation exam, Nguyen Thi Hai Yen (born in 2007, residing in Nam Dan commune, Nghe An province) asked her mother's permission to go to Vsip industrial park (Hung Nguyen commune, Nghe An province) to work as a worker to earn money to buy a computer for her studies.

I am Nguyen Thi Hai Yen.

Hai Yen is a former student of class 12D2, Nam Dan 1 High School. In the recent high school graduation exam, she excellently achieved 29.25 points in block C00 (Literature 9.25; Geography 10 and History 10). With this score, Yen is the valedictorian of Nam Dan 1 High School. Although she was very surprised and happy, the female student was also worried about the risk of not being able to go to university because her family was too poor.

“I really want to go to school and continue my university studies. I also believe that only through education can I change my life and escape poverty. And most importantly, I don’t want to see my mother suffer anymore,” Yen shared.

There are no valuable objects inside Yen's house.

Her father left when Yen was young, leaving her mother as her only support, but she was not very agile and had a hearing problem. Taking advantage of her time studying, she helped her mother farm, herd cows, and do odd jobs to earn extra money to support her life. The mother and daughter lived in a level 4 house built with support from her maternal family. Inside the house was empty, with nothing valuable. The only valuable assets were a cow that the government had supported for the poor family 4 years ago, along with a few bags of rice that had just been harvested.

Sitting next to her daughter, looking at her with loving eyes, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tham (born in 1973, Yen's mother) said that since she heard the news that her daughter got high scores, she was both happy and sad. She felt sad because her family was too poor, and if her daughter went to school, where would she get the money to take care of her? Every time she thought about it, she loved her daughter even more.

Hai Yen wants to study really well so that her mother doesn't have to suffer anymore.

Because her family is poor, Yen focuses on listening to lectures in class and studying at home. The female student makes the most of the materials provided by the teacher, combining searching for lectures and documents online to supplement her knowledge. Because she focuses on learning from the beginning and studying regularly, she avoids small mistakes and easily achieves perfect scores on exams.

“For History and Geography, I already knew my score when I left the exam room. The Literature result surprised me. When I read the questions, I found them a bit difficult and was initially confused. However, I regained my composure and finished the test. I thought I would only get about 8 points, but I didn’t expect to get 9.25 points,” Yen said.

Yen loves Literature and wants to become a teacher in the future.

After the joy of her scores, Yen's thoughts were filled with worries about the tuition fees. She did not want to give up her biggest dream in life, and she did not want her mother to suffer. "I have loved Literature since I was a child. I want to become a teacher, impart knowledge to children and have the opportunity to help those in difficult circumstances like me. In the near future, I plan to apply for the Literature Pedagogy major at Vinh University to save on tuition fees," Yen said honestly.

The ground floor house is where Yen and her mother live.

Ms. Le Thi Hong Thanh (homeroom teacher of class 12D2, Nam Dan 1 High School) shared: “Hai Yen is a diligent and studious student. In class, she is quite quiet. She is an example of overcoming difficulties in her studies, as evidenced by the recent high school graduation exam, she achieved a very high score, being the valedictorian of the school. However, her difficult family circumstances are a barrier for her to continue on the path to university.”
